just stumbled across this thread whilst looking for something else.. ironically, what makes me nostalgic is reading over these old threads!

such a shame all the photos from the early posts didn't survive the 2012 forum rebirth :(

I'm not sure if these have been mentioned yet, but some of my earliest memories of Stafford, circa 1984 ish and later....and in no particular order.

- The golf house on Kingston Hill (where I grew up) I could see it from my bedroom window but was never allowed to explore it.
- Russian Ron in the town center
- Mad Ken the barber in Littleworth, his barbers was at the back of the video store that is now the pharmacist, the guy was a legend!
- The Avro Vulcan flying over RAF Stafford during one of its open days.....the noise was deafening, but what a noise!

I remember working on a press in there one morning and he was late, forman asked him why he was late, he said he'd been on a mission over Russia the night before.
We don't see characters around like him any more.

The sports shop underneath the Ancient High House. You used to go downstairs and all you could smell was brand new trainers. Got my first pair of Adidas from there. I reckon that shop is the main cause of my unhealthy trainer fixation.
Sportsco! Quality shop. All the trainers were down in the basement as well so the smell just multiplied! I wish my house smelt like that!

I would have to say the hospital fun run is the event I look back on with the most fondness, it was spectacular for a youngster and had (from what I remember) a really community feel. Nothing like it exists any more.

I also remember enjoying the GEC pantomime, which they used to put on every year. A present for every child and a meal and goody bag. Nothing like that happens anymore, its genuinely quite sad.

Its a changing world but I sometime wonder if its better.

On post 347...the boy in the top picture ...

He is wearing a velour top, we all had one of those, they were all the rage back in the day.

To me, these two photographs have the most connection with my childhood - it's how best I remember that part of the Ancient High House. Looking closely at the first one, the visual clues tell me it was around April 1981. Withnail, are these your photographs?

Great picture again, Withnail. What I find striking is the traffic lights outside McDonald's (why?) and the 'To Let' sign, too. The picture looks circa early 80s and I know that Mc came to Stafford 82 / 83ish, so I'm wondering if it was when they'd just moved in?
