Old Marks and Spencer to become Poundworld?

I really don't get this north south divide, I've lived in both, I've handbag neighbors in both and seen badly behaved children in both. They both have great points. Back to the thread surely m and s is far too big for a poundworld. It would be the pigment one I've seen. I would like to see something a bit different in there, I would have liked a bhs but that's not going to happen now. Maybe a toys r us? I guess we will ha e to wait and see.

I don't think really in the scheme of things it's that large a unit - it always feels a bit squashed - certainly not big enough for a toys r us

What they need to do with the old Marks is knock it down & Build a department store on it, if they leave it and rent it out it will go the same way as the co op. This part of Stafford will die if something like this is not done

And if we can raze the whole of the town we could build a new airport for all the surrounding villages

The Toys R Us in Telford Centre is much smaller. Not many department stores around nowadays, John Lewis? If Waitrose aren't interested then are JL likely to be? Is the problem for the likes of these convenient car parking?

The co-op department store that's since been split into 3 different, smaller units....

I thought a Pound shop was opening in the former Haughtons furniture store and neighbouring units?

With regards to the perceived north / south divide - I live to the south of Stafford and when I do drive into Stafford Town Centre I park at the new car park because it allows me to pay on exit. In terms of shopping - I try to avoid that. However, I do frequent the proper pubs in Stafford, many of which are located in the 'north'; the Swan, Rose & Crown, Market Vaults and now No.7.

Stafford does not have a very big town centre, as such I'm sure the north and south of the town centre will survive and prosper, however investment is required in the Guidhall and the vacant units in the 'north' need to be replaced with decent shops.

Amazed people see walking as a chore, if I have the 10 year old on a saturday we'll walk from the common into town, then up to near B&Q (sometimes to the Matalan area) and back before meeting my OH in town for a drink (sometimes grab a KFC before we see her :p).

Mind you, you need to run the chugger gauntlet to get past the market square so I can understand some people not bothering.

I regularly walk into town. From my house to the Floodgate it takes about 15 minutes. I much prefer to walk than drive into Stafford.

Walking is a chore, it's slow, inefficient, time consuming and boring!

Depends on circumstances, I enjoy it. Plus it costs nowt and I don't have to pay to park, for anything longer than a few miles (or if I'm in a rush) there is the bicycle. I'd say maybe 1 time a month I think 'this would be easier if I had a car', you know things like needing to take rubbish to the tip, but other than that I can't see the point, can't even be bothered to fix my motorbike!

It's also free, interesting in that you see more of what's around you than you do when driving and helps keep you healthy and not a drain on the NHS.

I find that it can be an issue with people just walking across you without bothering - they should be required to wear black clothing, made in Germany, with clearly visible labels.

I'm not convinced by this, cheap date walks 4 miles a day and is still classed as obese :P
