One tip to improve my cycling?

Your wound(s) will be full of grit, and other items, from the road...

...your skin will harbour similar, if not identical, matter to that attached to any of your hairs, should we also remove that is a precaution..?

Do males have a higher infection rate than females with similar injuries?

I suspect that the shaving is just to make it easier to get any subsequent dressings off.

Yup. I can absolutely see me doing that on the Defender. What could possibly go wrong?

I might manage the wink at the end, although one eyelid would probably be the only bit of me moving.

If the kind gentleman who mended my puncture in scorching temperatures just outside Eccleshall yesterday, is a Forumite, then thank-you again.

I totally appreciate that many of the cyclists on here are perfectly capable of repairing and servicing their own machines - especially with the number of bike stands now taking pride of place in local garages.

For the benefit of anyone who is, even secretly, as inept as me, though, I can recommend this service: http://mobilebikerepairs.co.uk/ Ben, the mechanic, will come to your house to carry out most repairs and servicing. If he can't fix it on the spot he will take it into his workshop.

No waiting, no delays, minimum time without your bike. And he doesn't treat you like an idiot just because you have a different skills set (or in my case, can't remember where you put your skills set)

His website doesn't specifically mention Stafford but he definitely covers the town and surrounding villages. The only other website I found which does state that it covers the whole of Staffordshire, doesn't.

Some serious improving required now - got a place in Ride London 100 next year!

So between now and then I have to:

Build up my stamina to the point where I can ride 100 miles. That's a long way to DRIVE, right?
Complete the course in under nine hours
Tackle two really big hills without getting off and pushing
Escape the attentions of the 'sweepers' who remove slow people from the course.

Hmmm....it looks quite frightening to see it written down like that...in my favour, I am extremely bloody-minded.

Congrats on getting entry to the London 100.
Do you use any sort of tracker for your training runs? I have recently downloaded a beautiful app called STRAVA Ride for my iPhone. If you have an iPhone 4 or later you must look at this. It is Free; will track and analyse individual rides; saves each one on their individual map; pinpoints events on the ride such as climbs, descents and level straights with gradients, duration, speeds etc. If you have other gadgets such heart-rate monitor or cadence tracker it will will tell how many calories you are burning and yr power output. To top all this it looks good.
All of this is of course wasted on me but for nascent athlete such as yourself (strive as you may to hide it under your flowing dresses & bonnet)
I am sure it will be an inspiration & personal motivator. Try it, I am sure you will not be disappointed.
Good luck.
chances are it is also available for android devices - I haven't checked.
P.s. I have been doing some experiments with Cadence pedalling, more of this anon.

I have something very similar - Cyclemeter and find it totally addictive. It is hugely motivating and turns the daily ride to Stafford into a headlong dash to try to beat my personal best.

I will be very interested to hear what you have been doing with your cadence. I suspect/hope that cadence holds the key to improving my pace. How are you measuring?

When you've finished transcribing your experiments, would you mind going out for a ride some time to help me get my head round it?

Thank you Withnail. I'm feeling low-level sick with nerves and trying to avoid all the weather forecasts for Sunday.

My start time is 8.17am and all being well (if that 50mph wind is behind me) I hope to reach The Mall 8.5 hours later.

What was I thinking??
