Riots in Tottenham

It appears there were not enough police initially. Why was this.

Answer

1. Sensitivity we did not want a confrontation. ( I can understand that but why did they not have a contigency of police ready nearby)
2. Not prepared. ( loss of senior officers already impacting the Met ?)
3. Just not enough police ( overtime stopped )

Its sad to see this happen. My worry is this will start copy cat incidents. Only 4 miles from the olympic stadium and 7 to Downing Street

Its a sad reflection on society to be honest. Wouldn't be surprised to see other riots in other areas of the country shortly.

Did any of you read why the riots started?

There was an incident that lead the Met to shoot dead a 20yr old man while he was sitting in a mini cab. It is not clear why he was shot dead, if he was armed or if he provoked the police in anyway.

A large number of local residents gathered outside the police station wanting answers as to why this young man was shot dead. No answers were given. During this peaceful protest a 16 year old girl approached officers to ask questions about the incident - she was set upon by a number of officers using batons. That is why the riot started.

Right or wrong and despite what it turned into this didn't start off as large scale looting. It was started as a protest by local citizens wanting to know why the police had shot a young man to death.

He is 29 not 20 and the Police stopped a cab he was in. If he had co-operated with the Police then he wouldn't have been shot. But obviously he had a firearm or some other weapon.

The Police don't shoot unless they feel there is a serious danger to the public from an individual.

Local people have painted a picture of him being a model citizen with his family and 4 children. But that doesn't mean anything if he also carries a gun?

Reports suggest Duggan was a local Gangster involved in gun crime. Armed police from CO19, the special firearms team, had immediately returned fire on Dugan.Reports suggest he shot first, and witnesses have suggested he was shot in a taxi after he shot at police, hitting one officer, then jumped in a taxi.

Another witness said that a police officer had shouted to the man to stop a couple of times, but the man had not heeded the warning. At this point the man turned and shot the officer, who returned fire after being saved by his bullet vest. The witness spoke of at least four shots being fired, though in a built up area one shot can sound like two or more due to the surrounding buildings deflecting the sound. It was reported that there was a surveillance van on the corner before the shooting, and that this van had been there on and off for some days, suggesting that criminals were being monitored. Another witness said that he saw police trying to pull some clothes off a man who was bleeding, and that paramedics were unable to save the man.

His mother Pat Dugan, 52, and his younger brother Marlon Dugan, 26, who he lived with were said to be devastated at his death, though local residents are said to be happy that another criminal gunman has been taken off London's streets and there has also been a suggestion that the man was a known criminal who the police had been tracking in the area. The spokesman added that he understands the officer had been shot first before the male was shot in self-defence, and to protect members of the public from a man carrying an illegal firearm.

Agreed - the incident would have played out differently if he had co-operated.

I agree with this too.

I will hold my hands up - after reading more sources about this and reading the comments from both gilesjuk & joshua they have a better handle on the story than I do.

You'll forgive my initial reaction though. The met have got a bad rep at the moment (Tomlinson, Menezes, etc. etc.). Without having all the facts from a number of sources it is easy to make assumptions. I think after the full investigation has been made more details will come out.

The Riots have decimated the area causing approximately £30 worth of damage. Several priceless collections of mementos from Jamaica and Pakistan were damaged beyond repair. Three areas of historic burnt out cars were disturbed. Many locals were woken well before their giros arrived.

Rizla FM reported that hundreds of residents were confused and bewildered and were still trying to come to terms with the fact that something interesting had happened Tottenham.

One resident - Okowooki Hatti Smith, a 15-year-old mother of 5 said, "It was such a shock, my little Shilpa Chardonnay-Mercedes came running into my bedroom crying. My youngest two, Dwane Tyler-Morgan and Ounjab Victoria-Storm slept through it all. I was still shaking when I was skinning up and watching Trisha the next morning." Apparently looting, muggings and car crime were unaffected and carried on as normal.

The British Red Cross has so far managed to ship 4,000 crates of Special Brew to the area to help the stricken locals. Rescue workers are still searching through the streets and have found large quantities of personal belongings, including benefit books, jewellery from Elizabeth Duke at Argos and Bone China from Poundland.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Food parcels may be harder to come by but are needed all the same.
Required foodstuffs include:
Microwave meals
Tins of baked beans
Ice cream
Cans of Colt 45 or Special Brew.

22p buys a biro for filling in the compensation forms
£2 buys chips, crisps and blue fizzy drinks for a family of 9
£5 buys B&H and a lighter to calm the nerves of those affected.

There is an on-going inquiry into the shooting incident so why these people felt it necessary to march on the Police station and demand answers I do not know, looks like a set up and an excuse for rioting and looting to me.

Brilliant, a little to close to the truth for comfort though!

I heard one lad of Afro-Carribean descent complaining about there being no jobs because of all the immigrants!

Is it actually a riot?

Or a series of seperate disturbances?

It will become important to establish this later

On the news at tea time this evening I heard an interview with an organiser of the Peaceful Protest. He said, and I quote.."at the end of the protest there were these two unmanned police cars there, so it was like a red rag to a bull!"
What a very odd logic!
So if that's an excuse for stealing them and torching them, then starting a riot, I guess that's OK then!
