I was at our local pub tonight and someone came in wearing a Stafford Rugby Club shirt. I was tempted to ask them about the situation but I didn't because it really has nothing to do with me but I was surprised to see them in my local tbh.

Of all the things that piss me off about this whole debacle, and there are many such things, none pisses me off quite so much as -
Natural England, the Government’s statutory advisors on the natural environment, have now been consulted about the potential impact of the proposals. Natural England had originally objected to Stafford Borough Council but lifted this objection... Natural England now state that as the proposal avoids and mitigates effects on the SSSI they would have been of the opinion that the proposal would not have significant effects on the environment as far as their remit was concerned.
- this.

I shall word a suitably sarcastic congratulatory email to Mr. McLean when time allows.

That's not what NE told me. Part of the problem is that the DCLG accept the council's words as truth.

Reply from JL, I asked for his opinion, amongst other things;

Firstly may I apologise sincerely for not replying to your email earlier.

The current position regarding the rugby club proposal is that it has been passed by the Borough Planning Committee with many conditions attached to it. From what I understand as of today, it is being reviewed by the regional case work team of the Department of Communities and Local Government.

When the application was first made, I was concerned in particular the access to the proposed development. This was changed and the application resubmitted with revised access. Natural England, who are the statutory advisors on the natural environment, had originally objected to the Borough Council due to an overlap of pitches with the Doxey Marshes SSSI. Now that the pitches planned for that part of the site have been withdrawn and there is no overlap with the SSSI, they state that “they would have been of the opinion that the proposal would not have significant effects on the environment as far as their remit was concerned.” (see attached document).

I believe firmly in planning applications being carried out in a proper manner and in accordance with the law. It is right that they can be and are challenged on proper grounds, as this was. If the proposal is then modified so as to meet requirements, then it seems to me reasonable for the planning committee to approve it and also reasonable for the DCLG to look at the decision.

As for why I did not include my own view of the application in my newsletter, I do not generally include ongoing planning matters which are dealt with by the planning committee of the Borough Council. Of course, I do report on other sports related matters such as the future of the facilities at Beaconside and Shugborough. But this is because there is no planning decision involved. It is a question of trying to persuade the future owners of the importance of continued public access to sports facilities.

My apologies once again for this delayed reply.

Yours sincerely,

And Will Those Feet In Modern Time?
(with apologies to William Blake)

And will rugby boots in modern time
Walk upon Doxey’s marshes green?
And will unholy drunken fans
On Stafford’s pleasant pastures seen?

And will the tall and bright floodlights
Shine forth like evil saboteurs?
And was the rugby club builded here
Amongst our rarest plants and birds?

Bring me my Crow of burning gold!
Bring me my Sparrows of desire!
Bring me my Teal: o reeds unfold!
Bring me my Bearded Tits of fire!

I will not cease from mental fight;
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have swept the rugby club
From Doxey’s green and pleasant land

A nice piece of wordsmithery, but I think you are confusing football hooligans with rugby supporters mate. I accept you dont want them on Doxey but please don't tar them with that brush.
