Samsung S3 - Best contracts?

There is no transition AFAIK... unlike the T-Mob / Orange merger, they will remain separate entities, just share masts but you won't be able to roam across to the other network.

I dont quite understand all the fuss about the Samsung galaxy S3. It looks to me to be pretty much the same spec as the HTC ONE-X that I have had for a while now. The amount of press its had you would think its ground breaking technology or something.

Isn't the One-X a dual core GSG?

The S3 is quad core....

Although interestingly the One-X has 2GB RAM compared to the SGS3's 1GB....

Just what I read though, could be wrong....

All HTC phones now seem to omit the sd card slot, couldn't live with that. Did look at the one x but that was a deal breaker for me.

Now that'd do me, if I could drive....

Just tried the NFC capabilities, I read all the data from a workmates passport. Quite amazing, but also the only time I will ever use NFC I suspect!

No the one x is quad core and is noticeably quicker and slicker to use than the dual core samsung I had previously. You cant put a card in it to expand the storage, but then to be honest I never bothered putting a larger card in my galaxy s2.
Its amazing what these little phones can do these days. I reckon my laptop gets 50% less use since I got the new phone as its just so easy to quickly google something on the phone or check your emails.

At what point does it work out cheaper to buy the phone outright and have a good sim deal?

Never! It's a £500 phone, as my contract is £26.50 a month that's a bit over £630 I think? So I pay £130 for 2 years calls/text/data, not found a suitable SIM that cheap.

Agree with Tek, unless you can get a stupid cheap retention deal from your network when you threaten to leave them.... then you'll be not get much of a sim only for much under £10 month = £240 for 2 years.

Add that to a sim free phone.....

My wife tells me that council workers get a big discount at orange in town, might be %25, that is if you work for the council tek.

I work for the college, we don't count as council. We're kind of the black sheep of the public sector. I have an S3 now though, cost a bit over 26 a month.

So tempted, saw some great feedback from some S3 owners last week, only thing putting me off is having to transfer my number out to a PAYG sim and then transfer it back...

My crappy phone may finally get ICS soon so might make it bearable. Will wait until the iPhone 5 comes out and that should help the prices on the S3.

my htc sensation was working beautifully on android 3.x, but naturally when the "an upgrade to your system software is available" message popped up a few weeks ago i couldn't press "accept" quick enough..

i wish i had never bothered.. i can't think of a single feature that my phone now has (android 4.0.3) that it didn't have before - it just looks slightly different, runs like a lame dog, and has broken a few things (e.g. android 4.x won't allow third party apps to access facebook profile pics, so i get no caller ID photos in my messaging app).. if i could roll back to 3.x without massive faff, i would do it in a heartbeat..

My Galaxy SII - ran so much more better on 4.03 - it's been running it probably 2-3 months now (o2). Last week it updated to 4.04 can't see a lot different really in this one - but still runs ok.

That only happens if you stick with the same network, and its rare they offer a good retention deal. Who are you with?

I'm with T-Mobile... to be honest they have always offered me decent retention deals at the very last minute once threatened with cancellation.

However the best deals out there for the S3 at the moment are on T-Mobile (through 3rd part resellers), i.e. the Mobiles.co.uk deal and the Tesco deal posted above.

I went with Orange in the end, through dialaphone (see reply here). Loving the swappables, or rather the one swappable worth having. I went for deezer, and get unlimited free music streaming that doesn't use my data allowance.

Same thing happened when my Sensation received the OTA upgrade a couple of months ago. Biggest bigbear was that the clock no longer kept time (annoying as I use my phone as my alarm clock!) Was on the point of binning it and getting an S3 when a new update appeared about 3 weeks ago, fixing everything that had gone wrong. It's now perfectly fine again.

I'd give it a bit of time for the 'fix' to come through from your carrier to see if it solves your issues.
