What number was it? My brother keeps getting missed calls from Egypt, pretty sure they'll be the same shite.

Number Unknown...what a surprise eh TekM

Am I right in thinking that not ending a call leaves someone unable to use their phone again until the call is ended?

I didn't end the call for a good 30 minutes

Only if you are the caller. So you wasted your time sadly.

If you are on android you can block unknown numbers, I never answer my home phone so dunno if they call on that!

Not necessarily. If you make them believe you are interested, but say something like "bear with me while i turn the cooker off / answer the door" etc., then they will often give you a good 15 or 20 minutes to return before they realise. This is 15 or 20 mins they can't hassle anyone else ;)

Good thinking WMR, many thanks for that.

my mum called me after getting a phone call to her landline today,

this is what it was about:
'had call from someone who said my computer was downloading some info - they wanted me to go into my computer so that they could see what the warning they were getting was ok?? or something. - yellow/red warning.

I refused to go into the site they wanted me to - they phoned me on my land line.
I explained I would not go into anything without talking to my son - the sales guy said they were helping etc. etc.
he then got his boss to have a word with me - again it was difficult to understand what they were talking about.
he said there office was in California?

he gave me his web site link removed for safety Licence ID No.
He gave me his name as Edward Williams his personal ref number: XP00030'

luckily enough, she'd listened to me before on not giving anyone any info out.
no-one will ever ring you about your computer, whats on it, or what you're doing on it.
hang up the phone if you get a call.

Edward Williams is a common name used in all sorts of computer/internet scams, for some reason.

The scammers who phone to tell you that you have
a virus on your computer are at it again.

So, again, please warn anyone you think might be vulnerable.

They're never NOT at it as far as I'm aware. I get calls almost every day of the week from people that have received such a call.

As Ecker says though, always be on your guard

Glad you raised this! But be warned that these scammers are not always from overseas. I got a call like that, too, but the caller spoke good English and used a phone number that's apparently located in Clanton, Alabama.
