Shire Hall Gallery could be closed

Now there are not many things that draw people to the town centre from other towns and cities but this is one

Closing it would be like saying we have given up, stuff the town and any tiny spot of culture or arts remaining, we don't care because it - on the surface - does not make us any money. Because it is not simple to quantify the value of this facility

The Shire Hall Gallery is one of the few things that distinguishes Stafford from other drab nothing towns like Cannock, Burton and Uttoxter

The Shire Hall Gallery is one of the last remaining buildings conferring any individuality to the County town. It is beautiful, inside and out.

The Shire Hall does not belong to whichever band of semi-retired, self-important meddlers currently populate our council. Councillors should consider themselves custodians of local assets, instead of behaving as if the town centre is their own Cash in the Attic hunting-ground.

So the Library was moved from its purpose built home into the Shire Hall and now they've decided that's too expensive so they're going to somehow cram it into Staffordshire Place? Will the library consist of a few leaflets in reception? FFS

Don't get me started on moving the gallery. That's a beautiful building and having the gallery there ensures that it is maintained and the old courtrooms remain open to the public. Aside from the travesty of the loss of the wonderful Art Gallery, what is going to happen to that building? It's the centrepiece of our town and it's a listed building too.

Bloody Tories, they hate it when poor people have access to education and culture.

Rather than closing Shire Hall, which I completely disagree with. Why don't the County Council consider letting out vacating space at Staffordshire Place in order to generate revenue. Alternatively, why don't the Council focus more energy and sell land / buildings that they continue to own and are surplus to requirements (of which there are plenty).

I'm not sure that the Library is included, currently, in the possible closure plans, just the Gallery.

If they do need to move the Library, then there's this building, which, conveniently, remains empty and has appropriate signage in place, and this building, in current use, which would only need a small modification to the the signage.

It is, it's in the article! It's going to be moved from the Shire Hall into Staffordshire Place 1. So I stand by my previous comment.

"Another building facing closure and possible sale is Stafford’s Shire Hall Gallery.
The report outlines savings of £1.428million, achieved by relocation of the Shire Hall Library to Staffordshire Place and a ‘realignment of arts provision’ including ‘the vacation of the Shire Hall Gallery and reprovision of the arts offer."

Utter madness!

The Library currently exists and the newly-built Scaffoldshire Place has enough unused space to fit it in? All seems more than a little 'odd'...

Move the farking Borough Council in there if its that empty - then you have a decent site both sides of the river for leeejur and pant purchasing

It might all be a plan to make the 'retail space' in Scaffoldshire Place look slightly less of a white elephant.

The ground floor space in Staffordshire Place is scattered over 5 completely separate units. Not sure how they could be joined to make one decent sized Library. Plus as has been mentioned above there is now another unusable, unsellable building to add to the 18 or so unusable, unsellable buildings already vacated.
