    Ah, Mark Winnington.

Where do you even begin to start with his track record of success?

By current standards he'd make a great transport secretary.

The problem is , realistically they're only saving staff costs which were probably covered by art sales , and library sales anyway.

They still have to maintain , insure , and keep the building heated etc, so closing it was a pointless exercise to begin with.

Precisely. It was run on a shoestring anyway, and as they should have learned by now from the rows of empty buildings down Martin Street, developers don't want listed buildings and having them stand empty still costs a lot in maintenance.

The Shire Hall Gallery ran at a profit. It always made money for SCC. Closing it was because the idiots in charge of SCC didn’t understand what the Arts was about.

It should never have been closed in the first place.

Some number of years ago i had an interesting conversation with a visiting 'dignitary' to our humble heritage operation.

His thesis was that, essentially, the 'sort' of person that gets involved in local politics is generally 'sports' oriented, rather than 'arts' oriented.

Local politics is thus heavily bent that way.

Outside of the big Metro areas, the 'Gente' - you know, the 'right' kind of people right? like Sofa, for example, previously of this Parish, that actually put themselves forward, Sofa joined the Freemasons ffs. After putting himself forward as a Green candidate. And then the Labour guy from Littleworth, @RowanDraper , who betrayed us all by voting through the Rugby Club thing on the Marshes, then went all 'Labour are terrible, even though it would have been actually quite difficult to have been worse' and then finding himself unseated .

Backwater out-of-the-way places like Stafford are fronted by the kind of arseholes like @RowanDraper who couldn't give a flying f**k about Culture, about Heritage, about any of that. He will be replaced by A.N.Other arsehole who feels the exact same way.

They will not know their Arts from their elbow.

And, what is more, they will not care to know.

Why? What will happen if i drink, and then subsequently type 'lol'?

No, wait, let me guess... will @RowanDraper emerge from behind my sofa and tell me how passionately he actually believes in The Arts?

    Thanks for the heads up.

In what sense is it nonsense?

Do you reckon that many, if any, of our local Councillors - County or Borough - have a sensitive soul?

As youths, do you think that they wept in Butcher's Shops?

Or were they eating Meat Pies on the side lines?

    What's your f**king point @Gareth ?

    lol

There's probably something in this - left brain, right brain thing. Politicians are in a competitive environment more may lean more to a sports culture than arts or leisure. Rowley Park is another example. It used to be a park with a sport facility...now the whole location is geared towards sport. That's fine if you want to use those facilities but what about those that want something else? Surely, it is better to try and apply a 'mixed use' identity so that it can be used in a variety of different ways and for different sections of the community?

T'was open today. If I hadn't had my hands and arms full of shopping I would have nipped in. I was also in a rush to avoid the impending shower of rain.

It's not even like there is 'probably' something in this, there is most definitely something in this - which makes one wonder within which sphere our dear @Gareth orbits.

Our dear departed Oscar knew of those that know the value of everything but the value of nothing ,and was dismissive of them.

People are currently wondering in and out of the front. Not sure what they're doing inside though.

I would contend - that in the provincial backwaters in which we live, the great 'n' good, the movers 'n' shakers, are generally more keenly disposed towards the Sports Arena than they are towards the upkeep of the Arts.

Because the people who are drawn toward Public Service are those that have spent more of their time on the touchline than in line waiting to see Tracy Emin's messy bed.

I would go so far as to suggest that this way of thinking is not particularly controversial.

I would go just that little bit further and suggest that, if we look at local investment from public accounts over the last ten years, you might notice that 'we' have built a Sports Stadium and closed an Art Gallery in that time.

But, of course, it is me that is talking shit.

Because it is, of course, those that know the price of everything, but the value of nothing that rule our world.

    lol.
