Stafford shops closing - Turning into a ghost town?

Now watch to see if any new companies spin up, buy the assets and leave the creditors with nothing.

Because somehow it’s totally legal to do that

If done right you can simply change the company name, run away from all your debts and carry on like nothing happened.

I see Harveys on Moss Pitt have now closed and County Autos is located there. Same director, just different name.

Just a name change really, although I'd question why bother!

It's true about the poor quality though. When we were looking earlier in the year, was really surprised at the condition of the model we went to see. I get that it's potentially wasted money making them perfect when they could be sat for a while/test drives making them dirty etc., but it was so bad! We didn't stick around long...

Good way of getting rid of the bad reviews for a while (until people realise it is the same people and nothing will have changed). Gone from 3.7 (495 reviews) to 4.6 (11 reviews) on Google.

First review on Google though...

"This is used to be called Harvey's Autos, they have changed their Name to County Motors (or company was sold, the truth I suppose we'll never know). This means any purchases made through Harvey's Autos do not follow through to this New Company. They have not helped with a recent purchase made in December 2023 (we're now in January 2024), the car we've bought has a mechanical failure within 1 month of purchase (which is fine, as we all know this can happen). I then found out the exact same people work there and all they say is you did not buy this car from us and we can't help (although I spoke directly to the same guy who sold us the car). Very disappointed, people seem honest and are pleasant when you meet them, but turn out to be dishonest and will refuse to help once the car is out of their parking lot. I will now have to pay for this repair myself although I have warranty. From my personal experience I will not return back to this dealership."

And the response...

"Hello, Unfortunately you seem to have purchased your car from a different dealership. I suggest you contact your warranty company to help."

I wonder how they would get on in the smalls claim court? 🤔

Interesting that they had a charge put on both companies (Harvey's Autos Ltd & Countymotors Ltd) 3 days ago too.

Legally speaking there’s nothing they can do really, it’s a different company. Shady as hell, but I don’t think it’d get very far on a claim.

But yes. Same owner that has been there since they incorporated. Doesn’t look like it’s been sold or anything as it hasn’t changed hands.

True, unless there's anyway for a judge to make them pay etc, because it looks 100% shady to me, especially when the 'new' company had a near identical name, at the same address, same directors and has been incorporated for several years.

The fact that it’s been incorporated for several years works in their favour, it looks less like a warranty avoidance job

You could dump the broken car outside their premises with a sign painted on saying don't buy from these theiving bastards, as long as it has an mot and tax should be fine.

I don't think it's double yellow along there so as long as it a legal car they can't touch it to move it either! What a great plan!

Is it possible to take legal action against the director rather than either of the companies?

Only if they pierce the corporate veil, which is often surprisingly difficult to do.

Not sure this would classify as fraud, especially as it was an existing company.

Just noticed that the last accounts show the 'new' company as dormant. Last accounts for the 'old' company show creditors equally £6.2mil. 😳

Hopefully word will get around quickly that it still the same outfit, so to avoid them.

Oooo

Who were the major creditors? Lots of HMRC, or trade?

HMRC won’t lift a finger but you don’t mess with the auto industry.

What's the very plain unsigned brick building surrounded by tarmac just on the town side of Harveys / County Autos ?
