Stafford - tramptastic?

db

#chaplife
i'm not quite sure how it came up in conversation, but last night my missus asked me what the tramp situation was like in stafford (we both currently live in sheffield, and whilst she has visited the jewel of the midlands on occasion, she hasn't had the pleasure of living there & observing the locals)..

i wasn't quite sure what to tell her.. i said there were one or two, a couple of whom were pretty famous locally - russian rob (RIP) and the trolley woman, to name but two - but beyond that i couldn't say i had noticed any real tramp-orientated underbelly.. perhaps it's because i always lived in the wrong parts (i.e. not close to town).. or perhaps it's because there isn't really one to speak of..

what are peoples' opinions on the tramp contingent in stafford? and let's try and avoid the obvious "you'll find loads in zanzi on a weekend lolz!!!!11 :v: " answer, eh? :P

doesn't ring any bells.. was he a bona fide tramp, or just a bit of a hippy (a la sam from sam's records)? i'm intrigued as to why you would take a tramp under your wing, only to mock him by taking him to topshop lol..

russian rob (RIP) [/i] answer, eh? :P
this guy still lives and breathes....he has however been taken off the streets, and now resides at some hostel/home for the old, infirm, and slightly mental. i know this cos scott kennedy told me he looks after him and plays chess with him. the streets are a far more mundane place because of his absence. he once told me with all seriousness that he "owned all the bees in stafford" whilst wearing a halloween mask from woolworths. remember he always carried loads of dog food in plastic bags round with him, and the rumour was he was absolutely minted. but if you got downwind of him

i saw the trolley lady the other day, but she is now even more right angled than the last time you probably saw her dirty.

new ones ive noticed, although hes not quite a tramp but more of a mental, is this guy who has a mass of curly hair and a beard, always wears a tight white stafford marathon tshirt, a rucksack filled with god knows what, and really small shorts whatever the weather. he doesnt outwardly seem that mental, but when you see him hes always wearing the same attire, and he has the look of a mental. its all in the eyes.

also another bag lady who wears weird clothes, and some velvet hat, who just starts screaming with rage in the middle of the high street.

but youre right, theres a severe lack of actual tramps. dont spose theres many career prospects for tramps in stafford. better emigrate to the cities :rich:

do you remember the old guy that used to pick up dog ends in town?

he was pretty old, like late 60's ish (or at least looked it) and had a brolly with loads of plastic bags wrapped round it.

i remember drunkenly taking pity on him one night and offering him a cig from my deck and he looked at me as if id just insulted his mother...ok, so they probably were sovereigns, but there was no need to get sniffy about it ;)

yup remember him n all, wonder whats happened to him. you would have thought hed be grateful for a proper fag the miserable old get..

while we're on the subject of tramps, ive been put off giving tramps money. one new years eve it was freezing and snowing and this crusty type girl was sitting on the pavement on the bridge by 'spoons. feeling festive and in good spirits i gave her a couple of quid as she looked farking cold and miserable. i then buggered about my business in town and then drove up to the shell garage opposite (then) reynolds bar for some petrol. the slag was at the same garage filling up her battered old rover full of mongrel dogs and dirty children. dont think ive ever been so furious. i gave her an earful and asked her for my 2 quid back which she blithely ignored.

i never give money to beggars anymore.

i dont mind giving to shelter or other charities where provisions are made for those who have no where to go...but ive worked hard for my money and if its going to be pissed up the wall, im gonna be the one to do it...not somebody whos done nothing to earn it. (even my own bro never gets money as a present for exactly the same reason- its my own fault, i taught him too well ;))

i used to work at a well known offie in town and every time i worked in summer, the same kid would come in with about 40-50 quids worth of change.

who was he i hear you ask.....the kid who'd spent all day in town scrounging off members of the general public. late teens, early 20's, short dark hair, relatively clean, usually wearing trackies and carrying his sleeping bag on his back.

he actually earnt more per day than i did working a full time office job and 2 part times jobs (offie and a chippy).

did he ever get any money of me? did he bollox!!!!!!

on the subject of current tramps i can only think of the tall bloke with long hair who hangs around under the bridge by sainsburys and smells of piss. he is surely tramptastic !

its a funny one really, i feel like a bit of a hypocrite - if i start thinking "im not giving them any money because theyre just gonna spend it on drugs and alcohol" then hell, thats what i do! :slayer:

im pretty sure spending their few quid on booze is as good as it gets for tramps. still, best not to encourage them eh.
