Stafford will be unrecognisable in the next few years

So if we accept the Burghal Hidage calculations of four men per pole* of wall to defend the burh - how many men would we now need?

I'm going to start with a guesstimate of quite a lot.

*ie 5 1/2 yards, not some sort of crazy ukip manifesto pledge

Or should that be 15 feet which was the Anglian/Mercian/Northumbrian rod (pole or perch). The Wessex rod was 18ft and the 16.5ft was the compromise adopted when Alfreds brat's and their Saxon thugs overran the good Anglo-Danish lands.

The Burghal Hidage is Wessexian, so presumably 18ft - i'm not that 'up' on medieval measurements.

I'm afraid so.

If "we" continue to knock everything down, due to sheer uncreative blinkeredness, places like this (see link) will be knocked down in favour of tinsheds, that will never stand for even a tenth of the time, these places (link!) stood for!*

the above could easily have been turned into:

*erm, that make sense?

I went to art college in those beauties, they are/were lovely!

...they'll be dragged down by a bulldozer soon enough, I'm surprised they're still there.

Bye bye, heritage.

...I just need to win a few million and i'll be buying up a lot of land and property in Stafford.

I heard a rumour that the college still owns them but can't afford to fix them, no idea how true that is though. Probably cost more to put right than they are worth, amazed they are still standing though as the land must be worth something?
