Looks like it's just done the naval equivalent of changing gear. It's obviously moving forward, maybe at some speed, and yet the smoke's going straight up.
Look at the Mayflower's sails. Wind from astern. Relativity and the like.

I did a daylight trip from Dublin to Liverpool on B+I in the 70s - in September, but a steady westward breeze at the same speed as the ship made it feel like a Mediterranean cruise.
By the time we slowed for the Mersey approach there was an enormous black cloud above the ship - but, luckily, it did not obstruct the rather more oblique blazing Sun that we were enjoying on deck.
Enormous black clouds are something of a feature of Merseyside …
