Just a thought, possibly being dumb, but what does PAYE tax pay for? NI pays for the health service, council tax pays for local services (bins, cops etc.), road tax allegedly pays for roads, but what about the big bugger? There is vat on everything we buy pretty much, there is extra tax on anything thats fun, yet a large proportion of my wages end up in some black hole. Surely its not all for benefits scroungers?

Oh just miscellaneous items you know... moat cleaning, duck houses, toilet seats etc. The things that they couldn't really classify under any other kind of tax. And also, as you stated, it gets handed out to scroungers who can't be arsed to get a job and pay their taxes like everybody else does.

So they tax you when you earn, they tax you when you spend and they tax you when you save, yet I can see no real outlay other than job-dodgers and pointless wars? If we just sent the scroungers to war instead we'd be quids in surely?

As my income tax bill is several times more than my council tax bill, I can't help wondering what non-local services they are paying for that I benefit from.

After watching "Ask the Chancellors", I'm sure Vince Cable would do a grand job of telling us should he be successful. Top man, still not gonna vote for them though.

There aren't any ring-fenced taxes though....

Council tax doesn't cover the cost of local services as councils get a grant from government, funded by other taxes.

Road tax hasn't paid for roads since 1937!!

The black hole are things like idiotic PFI projects, new computer systems that never work, Trident missile type things that we don't need, ID card scheme that won't solve anything.

If you pay tax and have been paying tax for 40 years or 4 years you aint paying it into any state pension fund for you

Tis all a farce if you ask me. They'd be much better upping the tax free allowance to encourage wasters to actually work, then up the tax bands above this to cover the shortfall. As half their tax is only coming from those employed (at least half, its only really the fags/stella/petrol tax that affects dolies) they should be encouraging more people to work. My bro now has a job and he's only £30 a week better off than on benefits, thats just daft. Thank god he realises the world doesn't actually owe him a living. Stop the whole non-dom crap, stop companies trading in the UK yet paying tax elsewhere, make every pound earnt in this country taxable in this country.

That'd **** off a lot of the MPs mates though, and could hinder future employment plans when they leave office.

At the end of the day, all not local government taxes just go into one big pot really. All non local government expenditure gets spent form here.

Look here, seems the Northern Rock fiasco cost the same as housing benefits! Although I suppose we own a bank now?

If Thatcher hadn't encouraged the sell off of council houses, our benefits payments could be a lot less. As it is most people on housing benefits now seem to be in private accomodation rather than council, making a tidy profit for the landlords.
