3 generations of my family worked at the site on both sides of the road - the old loco sheds and the Castle Works factory site. As the plans have been rushed through - (what are the chances of that in Stafford?) and a usable industrial area will be flattened for more houses, you have to wonder where industry could happen in the town if the country rises again? The pictures of the decaying site sadden me as that was where I started my working life, where I used to wait for Dad at the gates at knocking off time as a kid, and I even had to halt my game of footie in the street when the hooter went at end of the day to avoid getting run down by bikes and cars!
Yes you used to get a fair amount of traffic when it was an active site but there wasn't as much general traffic on the roads back then and you didn't have as many parked cars either and people also had common sense! Now, you have to wonder if Castle Street will be used as a rat run rather than a safe thoroughfare and the bridge will be a case of an accident waiting to happen - narrow, blind and not made for vehicles hitting it at 20 mph!
