I'm curious about one thing. When was this built ? … I signed on once (in what seems like a pre-Jurassic time span ago) and the dole hole then was somewhere near the Newport Road railway bridge, perhaps next to the Post Office distribution centre (as I remember. :teef:)

The more I see buildings that went up in my lifetime disappear, the older I feel. (Don't mind me, I'm not depressed … but I've run out of rum !! :urgh::eek::grr:)

Also regardless of the aesthetic look good or bad of any building, I don't like to see this sort of thing happen. It speaks of defeat as well as decay.

Staffordshire Past Track shows a photo from Tony Boydon showing the building in 1976. I'm guessing that it was probably built very early 70s but I can't work out if it looks really new in the photo or not?

Would have made sense for one developer to buy the whole lot, including the shell garage, and just redevelop the whole area as it’s a sizeable plot.

As it is, the building looks unappealing, and I doubt it meets any modern building standards and there doesn’t really seem to be any alternative use.

Bulldoze and start over seems to be the best way forward.

I’m glad the other office block is being turned into apartments though, takes a derelict building off the street.

Speaking of buildings left to rot, I heard the other day the foster family still own the post house ?

I think they own one of the two buildings that were merged to form the post house.

Begs the question why are they still sitting on it not trying to either flog it or rent it out, although, I guess they don’t want to sell it at a loss after all the money they put into it.

Depends what you mean by 'family'

There's plenty of chatter elsewhere in this site

I suppose the big problem is how to demolish a building on stilts right next to a main road that really can’t be closed off.

Not that that’s ever stopped highways approving closures before

Won't it be another of those buildings that mysteriously sets on fire?

Enjoying a drop of red.

It wouldn't require closing the A34 to demolish that building, not by any stretch.

Haven't we had another building that conveniently and spontaneously combusted? Happened to be targeted for a development.

Would the initial demolition need a closure? I can't see how they'd manage to drop the building without potentially damaging passing cars.

Surely they'd just need to claw it down on itself and pull it away from the road , building a new one would be an issue though.

I don't know when it opened but it was under construction late in 1971. I used to lean on the boarding around the site waiting for the bus for a few weeks in that winter.
P. S. The old dole office was demolished to make way for the post office sorting office car park.
