Popped in for a pint last night and was told the really sad news that the pub will be closing :-( Really can't understand why similar pubs in more remote locations can survive and this one can't ?? Seems a real shame, sad times

Sad indeed, however, some words that come to mind are: investment, refurbishment, consistency, standards, fresh food, ingredients, andpleasegodnotapubco

The cheap drinks at social club probably isn't helping either. Most of the people in the village go there from what I've heard , it's not for me though

I went also one Saturday afternoon a few weeks back, and wasn't for me, different strokes different folks, and not enough strokes for this pub.

Pity.

The smoking ban was the last nail in the coffin, no pun intended, for many pubs. When I moved here the red Lion would be packed on a Saturday night, me and my mates would go out and sit on the bank in the summer. The place had a nice atmosphere back then.

Lots of pubs still thrive despite the smoking ban, and the Red Lion has a huge outdoor area they can use. I've not been for a while, the sight of a karaoke machine last time I visited meant I promptly cycled to Gnosall instead!

I can't say what is needed for this pub to survive, only what it would take to get me in there.

First thing would be a different menu, the new one looks like they were trying to compete with the Hungry Horse. If I want generic chain food crap I'd go there, what I want from a country pub is a simpler menu with a frequently changing specials board where the food isn't just defrosted and microwaved.

Drinks range is obviously important, I know they got Old Rosie in on the ciders but that was the one on the whole list I really wouldn't travel for. Why won't anyone just stock some bottles? They last for ages and you only need a few of each in the fridge, yet I frequently see in pubs 12 rows of the same weird flavour alcopop and they say they have no room to stock other varieties of drinks. 18 different flavours of WKD will not entice me in....

Decor, I like the bar but the extension just feels cold. It may look different now, been a while like I said, but it felt nothing like a country pub at all. Plus it had a karaoke machine in it....

Like I said, just my own 2p and probably different to what a lot of people want. Its what would get me there though.

E-cig ban would be ‘nail in coffin’ for Uttoxeter’s pubs
By UttoxeterPostandTimes.3522974.UttoxeterPostandTimes | Posted: April 04, 2014

A LANDLORD has called for the government to uphold his punters’ ‘human rights’ amid fears electronic cigarettes could be banned in Uttoxeter’s pubs.

Ministers in Wales are currently debated whether to ban the devices from enclosed public spaces, with many political commentators claiming the move could be extended to the rest of the UK.

Supporters of the proposed ban have said they believe e-cigs ‘normalise’ smoking undermine the exisiting ban on traditional cigarettes.

But Andrew Riley, landlord of Ye Olde Talbot, said he fears any ban would represent ‘another nail in the coffin’ for the pub trade.

He said: “The smoking ban, which has had a devastating affect on pubs, has already taken away the human rights of my locals.

“I’m not a smoker but, if I had the option, I’d definitely allow people to smoke in the Talbot.

The landlord at the Crown at Hyde Lea banned smoking several months prior to it becoming law, made not a hap'orth of difference to his trade.

Like I said, depends on the pub. The Greyhound does a great trade despite the small smoking area, but it sells good ale. Maybe that is the problem, without a fag to mask the taste people are realising what carling really tastes like ;)
