Who doesn't have a mobile phone nowadays? ...which can be dedicated to a business? ...more so if you are running a business, no?

I feel it's too easy to be professional when you have a business, so to become lapse in professionalism is always shocking to a potential customer/client/money spender, that's all i'm saying, from what i gather that's all this thread is trying to say.

True. But it will also add to price you pay.

hey, all i'm after (and others on here, including the thread starter) is a good service, in all aspects from those that are supplying a trade/service.

Having spent the last few hours in the garden, I can't help wondering what someone would charge to jet wash some decking. Still, at least I have a good day for it!

Just had a quote £50 for a patio approx 12ft by 15ft

If thats with them bringing all their own kit I'd probably take it, you could buy a basic washer for that but then you actually have to use the damn thing!

I am a young(ish) father to 2 children, one just recently, 3 weeks old, little beauty! I have not long moved back here as it is my hometown, and as i have no qualifications, driving license, and am fed up with signing up to agencies, i am struggling to find work, and would welcome any advice on helping me find work to support my beautiful children. I will literally do Anything for work, i would clean toilets for 50 hour shifts! I realise this may not be the right place to put out an 'advert' looking for work, but i really am getting desperate :( and as i have read a few people saying that people are turning down small jobs etc, i thought i would add myself into the mix as a young keen lad who is willing to do anything to support his family. Thankyou :) P.S, i am new to this site and have no idea how messages etc work, so any help would be greatly appreciated. And can i just say i think you are all very informative/entertaining, and i really enjoy reading all your posts. And now that i am a whizz (HA!) on a computer, i shall be joining in with threads myself, as long as that is ok :)

well, you've managed to sign-up and post this message, so you're doing alright so far!

keep an eye at the very top-right of the forum, as little red alerts will pop up there to show if someone has posted in a thread you have taken part in (e.g. this one), or if someone has sent you a private message.. just click the alert to read it :)

to send someone a private message, just click the "Private Message" link underneath their name, underneath their avatar (the little pic that represents them)..

best of luck - you sound like the sort of chap who gets things done, so i dare say a few people will be in touch!

Welcome Bigdaddy. I admire your efforts to find work. Can u be more specific in your tallents as there may be all sorts of bits and pieces that may be offered your way. Also admirable it is however are you aiming to register as self employed enabling you to pay tax as we do...

Post away mate you have the hang of this ok and sincerely hope work starts coming your way...

Oh and congratulations on new family member. ....

I am looking into registering as self employed. I am 28 years old and i have worked since the day i left school at 16, and i am only fairly recently unemployed, so i have always paid tax (and lots of it) and would never dream of cheating the system in any way. I despise people who do as its obviously not fair on anybody else. I am an honest hardworking person just struggling to find work and i am doing everything i possibly can to provide for my lovely little family. I have experience in Painting and Decorating, a little bit of building/roofing work, Manual Handling, general gardening work, household chores, DIY/Handyman work, and i am 110% willing to do anything, clean toilets etc, any job people dont want/like to do. I just want to provide for my family and i dont want to live on government handouts. I want to be somebody my children can be proud of. Thankyou for the congrats :)

How do I edit this?
Anyone on here still after someone to cut their lawns? Main housing area's only though and not "out in the sticks"...

I'm not sure whether you're the man behind the website sir, but it doesn't necessarily come across as the most customer focused of businesses. There's rather a lot of what we won't do (move toys, use a strimmer, accept payment other than cash at the time, arrive at an appointed time, take away grass cuttings) and perhaps not enough of what you do do. Forgive me if I'm speaking out of turn, but I found that off putting. Apart from maybe the strimming thing, I don't think there's anything there that's unreasonable, it's just that it could be written in a much more appealing way. I'm a long way from anything you'd consider a gardener and even I run a strimmer around the edges when I cut the grass!

I totally understand what you are saying and will take your points on board. I've done similar a few years ago to help top up income when work has been quiet and only used leaflets which pretty much stated the same points though, and to be fair I did okay out of it. I guess there may have been a couple put off, but the bookings I did get seemed to totally respect these points and I arrived to find their garden ready to cut without too much messing around.
Not saying by any means that you don't have a point though and i'll definitely be re-wording a few things in the next 24 hours so thank you for your comments. The "cash only" thing isn't a "back pocket" issue as I'll be putting all payments and expenses through my books anyway, it's more just because of ridiculous bank charges when banking cheques into my business account - and the same reason why I've stopped accepting cheque payments for my main business. Can't quite think of a shorter more friendly way to state that though so suggestions welcomed.

Thanks for perusing the site and giving honest feedback - I appreciate it

I am currently in a rather bizarre position with an unknown tradesman.

Some weeks ago an event occurred which required a fairly immediate remedy. All the work could be done from outside, so it was doable whether the (rented) premises were occupied or not.

I got somebody I know to agree to do it, but it didn't happen very quickly, so I had to do a very temporary bodge job. Since then, the weather has been particularly kind, but the initial contact finally admitted that he was not actually going to do it.

The owner of the premises lives many time zones away and we have since both made efforts to find somebody to improve upon my bodge.

These efforts seemed to be fairly fruitless, and we had just about become resolved to doing it between us when he is here for a few weeks next month - if my bodge even lasted that long.

However, somebody ( three blokes and a van ) turned up and did the job yesterday ( and very well, too ). I was tipped off by the tenant, but they were gone before I got there.

Thirty hours on, we still have no idea who it was. The only person I can think of who had enough detail to know where it is has denied doing it...
