Tradesmen turning down work? Isn't there a recession on?

Once, i had a workman fix a leaking section of guttering. whilst i was out he Fixed it, i never saw him again, never asked for payment, never to be paid.

Bizarre.

Some of them really are a law unto themselves.

I am currently in a rather bizarre position with an unknown tradesman.

Some weeks ago an event occurred which required a fairly immediate remedy. All the work could be done from outside, so it was doable whether the (rented) premises were occupied or not.

I got somebody I know to agree to do it, but it didn't happen very quickly, so I had to do a very temporary bodge job. Since then, the weather has been particularly kind, but the initial contact finally admitted that he was not actually going to do it.

The owner of the premises lives many time zones away and we have since both made efforts to find somebody to improve upon my bodge.

These efforts seemed to be fairly fruitless, and we had just about become resolved to doing it between us when he is here for a few weeks next month - if my bodge even lasted that long.

However, somebody ( three blokes and a van ) turned up and did the job yesterday ( and very well, too ). I was tipped off by the tenant, but they were gone before I got there.

Thirty hours on, we still have no idea who it was. The only person I can think of who had enough detail to know where it is has denied doing it...

Investigations are ongoing.
Well, eight days on, and after several false leads, it seems that we may have found out who it was.

However, due to time zone effects, I'm not going to find out who to pay until this afternoon.

Was it Jean-Claude Junker?
