I bet those guys on the picket line will be the first to squeal when Perkins eventually pull out of Stafford in favour of a more up-to-date manufacturing facility with a more co-operative workforce in Peterborough or similar. We've seen it happen before with many Stafford based manufacturers. It seems to me that these guys should be thankful they have a (reasonably) secure job in the current climate let alone the promise of a pay-rise. They don't know how lucky they are. If they don't want their jobs, there are many Stafford people who would willingly take them off their hands.
I've continually endured pay cuts & short-time working over the last couple of years so a full-time job with the promise of a pay-rise in June sounds pretty damn good to me!

It is, however, very easy to fall into the mindset that says you're lucky to have a job. One could just as easily say they are lucky to have you.

Doesn't work so well in a 'Global Economy', admittedly, but Douglas Oberhelman is probably not feeling the 'pinch' quite so badly.

TOTAL COMPENSATION*

Total Annual Cash Compensation $996,631
Total Short Term Compensation $729,996
Other Long Term Compensation $313,011

Total Calculated Compensation $2,994,775

Funny how the big guys don't get 'paid' but 'compensated'. Compo culture!

Who exactly is paying for this global down turn?

We're getting 0.2%, apparently we are now public sector again. Funny that we didn't enjoy public sector pay rises! Will I strike? No, as I'm still well paid for what I do if location is taken into account. I'd earn more if I moved, but I don't want to.

As much as I whole heartedly agree for people standing up for their rights, people should remember what climate we are in. Cat (who are at Dormans) will eventually take their manufacturing overseas. They are not a company to stand for this. Sad as it is. My family member works there and she is very tied whether to strike or not.

Having said that well done to those for making a stand, in sticking to your beliefs.

Major companies are well aware that it is not that simple to get a job elsewhere - so they will just use you.

If the tixall road plant becomes unprofitable it will be closed, and lots of locals will be competing for the same very few jobs available. A pay rise is not a right, I'd accept 4% happily. Very few sectors have promised pay rises every year, and as stated many are taking cuts. Would those striking be happy if perkins made a few redundancies to cover costs?
When I worked I was never lucky enough to get 4%. I wonder if the striking workers have thought what might happen to them and how difficult it might be to get another job if the factory has to close.

Don't believe the hype.. a fine example is WW2, Winnie was urging all to pull together yet the war effort had to be paid for and one section of society paid and suffered the most......

To undertake legitimate industrial action is a minefield these days, and any Union that ticks every box to call a strike has a clear mandate from their membership to do so.

Canvas.

If you ask for my opinion.
i didn't, but i welcome it.. i already have a banksy canvas (so passé) so it would certainly make sense to match that..

although the wooden framed version would match my recently bought ridiculously cheesey bar globe lol..

You got that! Fantastic!

I didn't share the dismissals - i thought the 'world domination' fantasy aspect was disregarded far too easily.

But seriously, go canvas - you know it makes sense.

If Perkins Engine Centre closes it would be a very concious decision made by people of whom promise to pay investors a specified return. If that means upping sticks and going elsewhere I very much doubt they would even look back. (Theres irony in them there hills)

However I believe the site at Stafford has in the last 3 years made in the region of a quarter billion $'s in clear profit.

A very tidy sum I'm sure!

In fact I believe CAT has been in clear profit for 9 out of the last 10 years so one would assume missing out on a pay rise for more than one year in ten would seem a trifle unfair regardless of the figures involved.
