What I Did This Weekend - In Pictures!

Not a day for going outdoors so had a lazy day reading and finishing off the jigsaw.
This was a lovely one to do, lots of interesting bits to pick out.

As related elsewhere, there was progress on the bench today. The second sheet was stored in the conservatory, about fifty yards away and is about as heavy as I can manage on my own, that, plus the stiff east wind, made transporting it to the shed a bit of a job, but I got it there and in place in the end.

Then it was trimmed to suit the profile of the first sheet.

There is a little 'curl' at the far end, but this will pull down when the rest of the underframe is in place, if it doesn't sort itself out first.

There is also the gap along the far edge, but that can be filled in easily enough from the offcuts.

It will also come a foot or so to the left, towards the fire, to allow the gas cooker to be built in there - at some point...

I took the opportunity during the day, to take a picture of my nuts for @littleme

I've got a couple of the braces under the second stage, so three quarters of the full bench is usable now - the remaining two further braces are mostly pre-fabricated, but they need to be finally fitted around the box the cooker will be sitting in, which I haven't made yet.

I am considering fitting a sink in the far corner.

If I do, I think I'll put it the other way up, so the water'll stay in better.

Are you planning to live there forever and never go back to the big house?!
I have the equipment and the space - I might as well have the facilities. The cooker will have a 'flush top' with the main surface, removable when in use, and I have mains water into the adjacent greenhouse already.

When we lived in Cyprus, for the first three months we lived in a new house in Limassol. The family that had built the house lived in a Shed at the back, whilst they recouped some income to pay for it.

When we went to Corfu back in the day, we stayed in a nice small block of apartments. The owner lived in a small wooden rickety shed ( like my 6 x 4 shed ) behind them during the holiday season, then moved back in to live out of season. Used to see him standing outside showering with a hose pipe.

A bit of progress on the far end of the bench.

I had limited material left to create the cooker housing and I wanted to do it outside, to reduce the potential for mistakes. today was the first plausible day for a while.

The box is clamped in place, while I mull things over for the night. There's a bit more to fill in around it and it will have a 'plate' to stiffen the left-hand side.

There will also be a 'flush top', which will have a batten underneath, so that it won't lie flush if any of the controls are not in the 'off' position.

I'm posting here because when you're retired ... even weekdays are the weekend.

A few months ago I treated myself to putting a gaming spec computer together if for no other reason than to pass the time ... (I'm not really a gamer.) I wanted to stretch it a bit, so I invested in the new Microsoft Flight Simulator software which was a huge download for installation. I have used the old 2000 Flight simulator back in the day, but this package is vastly more sophisticated, and uses downloaded actual graphics for the landscape (bit like Google Earth) and you can also go in real time as regards air traffic and weather (haven't tried that yet.)
All this was set up in the conservatory so I haven't used it for a bit as it's been a bit chilly in there. However I have learned one thing from usage:

You can't land an Airbus on my back lawn. (Well, you can .... but it definitely disturbs the entire village ...)

Switched it all on this morning and a mega update was ready to go in. 23 GBytes worth. So left it running away before I try and put tyre marks (and other burning wreckage) on my lawn. :P

Bloody big update as you can see .....

Google Earth has an inbuilt flight simulator, although fairly basic.

It's quite pleasant to burble round with it, not feeling obliged to shoot at things.

A couple of years ago, I picked up a rather nice stainless steel and glass outside lamp - with little exposed material that will succumb to the UV, it should last a good while.

The idea has been to site it at the end of the house, in a dark zone where I habitually park the car and where the bins are located. There is a gate there, so placing it above that would light both sides. I have a few channels left on a remote socket system, so, by using that, it could be operated from anywhere within 20 yards, or so - handy when returning with the car - if I've remembered to take the transmitter, of course.

The wall inside the intended location has a full-length built-in wardrobe set-up - and, in the late 90s, I removed the centre upper cupboard to conceal the wiring for the lighting that I installed in the 'dressing table alcove'.

I do remember that getting the cupboard down and (particularly) back up on my own was a bit of a struggle - but, I've done it once, so I can do it again...

So, I got the cupboard down - and discovered that it was a bit heavier than I remembered, even though I had the sense to take the doors off first.

I also discovered that, although I presumed that I had come down from the attic with the supply for the lights, I had, in fact, used a hidden (pre-existing) double socket that is behind some drawers in the bottom of the right-hand wardrobe. There is even (conveniently) enough space behind the drawers for the remote adaptor with the plug in place - win!

Also, the location for the lamp is within the 'footprint 'of the centre cupboard, so I didn't need to remove anything else when I had drilled the hole through the wall for the cable.

I did all the necessary connections and testing, then attempted to replace the cupboard. At this point, it became clear that it was close to, if not exceeding the level of effort that I could supply. I was close to admitting that I would need to wait until the restrictions will reduce and allow me to shanghai some unsuspecting passing walker.

At this point, I resolved to have a think and one final attempt.

I managed to get the cupboard almost back in place, but, possibly due to the current weather conditions, I discovered that no amount of violence would persuade it into the final correct location, so a small amount of planing occurred in situ.

All is back together now - I just await darkness for a proper trial.
