Well it isn't rythmic gymnastics, ice dancing, synchronised swimming, ballrooom dancing etc. Anything where a judge has any influence is under scrutiny, and my jury is out on F1 (sorry Mrs T, but I like my sport to have level playing field, quite literally!). I am sure there are plenty of others, and what is the difference between a sport and a passtime/leisure pursuit?

Gon2seed what's your opinion on darts?
I'm sure there was talk of trying to make darts an Olympic event....the problem being that it's only really the UK and the Benelux countries who compete! I suppose it means we'd have a strong chance of winning some medals..

I can see no problem with darts being a sport, after all is darts not just a off shoot of archery and shooting?

What about the alleged influence that refs have in football? Agreed they don't make an overall judgement based on the performance, but they do have to judge whether a tackle was or wasn't a penalty etc, and there have been plenty of instances over the last few years where referees have been accused of favouring certain teams and therefore making decisions that others may not have done...

hey most of us have red buttons on our remote controls now, maybe we get rid of the refs and judges and just press the red button,

we are all armchair officals. power to the finger

Yeah I press the red button when I self-appoint myself as an official for Big Brother...it's called the off button.

Aussies, Yanks (John Part, World Champion), Canadians and the Benelux nations all have a history of taking up the Oche, and its growing in popularity in the Far East, so I say get in there, how many countries take rowing seriously?

Take your point about refs Andreas', but I only intimated that sports employing judges should be scrutnised. I've scrutinsed soccer, and the gon2seedometer says ....

It's a sport!

That's true actually, but considering 203 countries currently participate in the games, that still gives us mighty good odds! I've just remembered that the Australian darts player Tony David has haemophilia....surely darts isn't the best game for him?!

Fair enough!

Could you not argue that an F1 team having a better car like McLaren of Ferrari is the same as Man Utd or Chelsea having a better squad? I often hear F1 sceptics argue that all drivers should race identical cars. It's like asking all Premiership clubs to field the same players. F1 is a team sport just like football, cricket or rugby - and the club with the best team wins.

excellent analogy

i always cite this (the buying of football players) as my primary reason for not really being interested in football.. i can't get into it, because i don't find myself having an affinity to any particular team as they are not representative of anything personal to me.. that's why i have much more of an interest in how stafford rangers do than any "premiership" team..

Accept the above but my problem is that it is eleven people against eleven people in footy. When you introduce a machine that is far superior to the others, and then claim that the fella that is driving it is a genuis because he wins, I just don't get it. I like my sport to be between equally matched people in that they have two legs, arms, eyes, etc. The advantage that they gain is due to their skill, conditioning, training etc', and as usual a bit of luck. It is the superiority of the teams ability, either individualy or collectively, that wins matches on the whole, not a vastly superior machine.

Seems to me F1 is a totally uneven contest, in that it is the machine that decides the winner, not the skill necessarily of the driver, otherwise why is Button such a wash out this year! Most of the field do not stand a chance, but not because of their own skill, but because of the car. You could argue that you get to drive the best cars because you are the best driver, but that patently isn't true, it seems it is a combination of marketability, skill, luck, backing, face fitting, etc' etc'.

No one really knows who the best driver is, because the car is the predominant factor.

You can argue who is the best footballer, but your arguement will be based on the players skill on the pitch, not on his/her use of superior equipment.

The playing field is never level, but some are a lot bumpier than others!

PS I have no problem with F1 as it is I don't want it changed, I just happen to think it is an entertainment, industry, showbiz creation more than a sport. And of course I know that exactly the same could be said about the Prem' and that's why i have no interest in it, and prefer to watch Stafford even though £12 seems rediculous

Hmm a load of fast cars going round and round a circit where thay can hardly pass each other and have to do it in the pits - not what I call entertainment. But then I can watch 5 days of Cricket which turns out to be a draw and be thouroughly entertained all the way so each to their own!
