What's happening to The Island pub?

About 2 months ago I saw a couple of men discussing what they could do to the building and then a few weeks ago all of the windows were boarded up.

The pub isn't on the Fleurets website but the sign still says For Sale. I understand the building has now been sold.

Anyone got any more news about what's happening?

I hope it reopens as a pub again.

I seem to remember that the original plans for the redevelopment of the old Riverside gym and the old Tesco Bridge Street Car Park included plans to redevelop the roundabout where the Island Pub is - I think it was to be connected via a footbridge. I have no idea whether this area is still part of the M&S development as it stands. I have no idea whether the M&S development is still going ahead at all - it all seems rather slow to get off the ground.

So what would happen to all the businesses on the island that are already there?

The tyre place, the bathroom place, dry cleaners and the lovely guys that clean my car?

i hope the car wash eyesore is vanished, looks bloody awful, in fact the majority of that island looks a mess '...Welcome to Stafford...', apart from the row of buildings (Island pub included) and the remains of the Stafford wall (?), the rest should be bulldozed and relocated to better looking premises or better/well equipped location, perhaps Cannock?!

As for the Island Pub building, i also hope it comes back as a boozer but i feel it'd have to be a splendid drinkery to stamp its mark, as it's out on its own.

Any news, like the thread starter, i'd like to hear about it.

The car clean guys do a wonderful job....inside and out for a tenner and I leave it with them for 2 hours so save on car park money too.
I also get my nails done on the island too so hope they don't ake your advise and bulldoze the lot!

... and the remains of the Stafford wall (?),

It's not part of the wall, that is further round the racetrack, it is the old town lock-up which was attached to the White Lion pub.

Island could be a pub again, Titanic were going to buy it until the Sun became available, but I would guess an ethnic restaurant is more likely.

I suspect it would be more viable as an option to buy and develop now that the Sun Inn is a success...

The Malt & Hops used to be the busiest pub in Stafford when I were a youngster, shame it's been closed for ages.

i survived on cheesy chips at the Malt & Hops when i was an art student, the good 'ole days!

I wouldn't' care all that much for a Chinese/Indian/Thai restaurant to take up residence there, seems like the perfect plan for, umm, 24 months til it went bust, but that's what they do best, it's prime location for any business, though that doesn't mean it's immune from the bite of a recession, but a good/prime location nonetheless.

and if does become a pub, then The Lock House Inn seems like a great name, so's to tie it in with it's mini neighbour.

I once had to relinquish an eight inch Bowie knife to the bouncer there - strangely, he wasn't concerned about my spear or tomahawk until his compatriot pointed them out to him. I then had to leave all three behind the radiator and try to find somebody to buy me a drink, as I had no room in my loincloth for a wallet. He was reluctant to let me have my weaponry back as I left, warning me the "the coppers'll have you" - they didn't...

I have a picture somewhere.

The Island/Malt and Hops was also called the Dirty Duck for a while - it was the King William originally...

If I win first it will be converted back to the "King Bill", complete with the granny serving real bitter and tatty hard wood bench's and 40 watt bulbs!

Edit... yes Mr Marwood , nothing at all.
