What's happening to The Island pub?

Some chaps were clearing some debris out just now, and were happy to discuss the situation with me (perhaps only because I pointed out that I wasn't basil). It seems that it is intended to be (yet another) Indian restaurant, opening in the late summer. They were kind enough to let me have a quick look round inside and it is looking very 'rustic' after all these years...

Just what we are short of in Stafford.

Shall we start a guess the name competition?

How about The Spice Island or the Balt and Hops or the the Dirty Duck Jalfrezi? Any others? ;)

Stone seems to thrive with it's abundance of restaurants and food establishments, but there's something i don't understand.... We live in a town with shops and business disappearing more than appearing, there's therefore less employment than ever YET WE CAN ALL AFFORD TO EAT OUT??!
Or is it actually that the constant appearance of more housing estates has brought so many people to Stafford to live as a commuting town that it now needs this many eateries?
I cant help but feel that there are already too many similar restaurants that have enough empty seats even on the busiest nights as it is. Can't somebody open up something in Stafford which we actually NEED or at least WANT to see?????

I know what you mean, we can't have had a recession yet still kept all those coffee shops going surely? And yet they thrive, or in starbucks case make absolutely no taxable profit yet stay open regardless.

Ye Gods! Are we going for the curry half mile?
Spice Island, Narvana, the old library plus various take aways - we're hardly diverse, are we.

I am trying not to grind my teeth with more huge inaccuracies from those who are just guessing on this forum yet again. Last year saw an upturn in Stafford bucking the national trend by some distance in new businesses starting up (talking across the board here) with almost 500 new businesses, a variance of 80%

First quarter this year we are looking at 60 more businesses than those closing. The town centre is almost a 1 closes one opens at the moment and still better than he national and local trendif SBC and SCC hurry up and don't mess about with the special committee meeting on the 8th it will get alot better sooner rather than later.

What exactly do people want, it isn't Greek, Mexican or Tapas as these have failed massively ( more than once in some cases) in very good locations in the town. While I welcome any diversity in food I just wonder where the stats are to back this up in Stafford?

People complain about closing businesses and empty shops but complain when they don't pops up, or in this something we aren't even 100% sure it is going to be yet. Damned if you damned if you don't.

Errm I would like all 3, maybe its not the locations that were the problem but rather the quality/or price. I don't remember there being a Greek place (I don't get out much), and years ago we used to travel over to Stone for Casa Loco (I think), I went to the Tapas place in town a couple of times-and although it was nice, it was just far to expensive!

People want nice food at a reasonable price, the only thing that's within our budget at the moment is Pastiche and were lucky if we get to go there twice a year.... I would love to try The Swan or The Post house but they're just over our budget :(

It doesn't matter what the location is, if its good quality and a good price then people will go!

Is that stafford or staffordshire? Because I can't think of 60 that have opened in the first quarter let alone 60 more than have closed? Maybe what we need is the information published of when a new business starts up? Not sure how I can provide them with my custom if I have no idea they exist!

That was Odysseus, the old Castle Tavern, between the Windmill and the Sainsbury roundabout.

Yep, which then closed down, then was a Steak restaurant? then empty for a while, there was talk of it being turned in to flats then along came another Indian restaurant which has closed as far as I can see.

Is that place cursed or just badly placed?

It was in the same place when it was the highly successful Castle Tavern, I seem to (partially) recall.

The CT was great, amazing food there and not too expensive. Then changes were made, quality dropped while prices constantly rose and service became abysmal. Funnily enough it then closed down.

Can't comment on any of the more recent incarnations as I've never been inclined to visit, usually based on bad reviews from people I trust.

I don't think that I was in there after Clive and Ruth's time, but it really was thriving back then.
