Tried the shop near the prison but it was closed, sign on the door said he was nearby but when I called him he said he'd be about an hour.

Pak Supermarket just round the corner from Stoke station near signal radio has the best range of ethnic ingredients I've found short of visiting Birmingham.
Used to go to their branch near Perry Barr until this one opened.

We just had to call the owner of the Gaol Road shop to get him to let us in- maybe that's the way it's run now? He only took five minutes to arrive though.

Excellent range there, just wish I'd had more time to google what the proper names were for stuff. Wanted onion seeds but didn't know they were called Nigella?!?!? Got a few bits and pieces though :)

Nigella & onion seed are very different things. Nigella as in the culinary seed is closely related to love-in-a-mist. They both belong to the genus Nigella, the culinary version is Nigella sativa, love-in-a-mist is Nigella damascena. N. sativa seeds taste of onions, black pepper and oregano. They have a pungent bitter taste and smell.
