Any thoughts on this one guys...

A customer has AOL (or AO Hell as I prefer to call it), and if I connect their router (via ethernet) into my laptop it works instantly - full internet access.
On their desktop machine it comes up limited connectivity. I can access the router settings page but not the internet.

When his tower comes back to mine, I connect it to my own network (via the same Ethernet port) and it comes straight on!!

Back to his and we had a connection for all of 3 minutes then limited again. Limited at every boot up since. Back to mine and it works every flaming time.

Now, his PC is quite past it anyway, DVD writer is dead, hard drive is sticking and takes FOREVER to boot up etc. He's quite happy to have the whole thing re-gutted (basically a new build) but the network issue is so annoying that I don't want to continue with a new build only to find that there's something more sinister to his router!!!

Last things... DHCP is enabled all around, TCP-IP settings are all on automatic IP address etc. My laptop got assigned an IP automatically when connected to his router. His tower got IP automatically at mine etc etc etc.

WORK THIS ONE OUT!!!!! ;)

Have you tried turning it off and then back on again? ;)

is the router an adsl router? try flashing the firmware or performing a factory reset.

Also you could try uninstalling TCP/IP from the tower and then reinstalling it from scratch.

What AOHell software is installed? check all of the settings for connectivity in there. my limited experience of aol's warez is enough to tell you how pedantic, tedious and generally demotivating the aol software configuration can be.

If hes having a rebuild, just spend 40 quid on a new router as well. Dont make the mistake I made 2 days ago.

Client calls. His server isnt connecting to the net anymore. His three laptops are all connecting wirelessly as well.
Pressure is on. Cant afford do have any downtime. Didnt even think it could be the router. Server was playing up over the last few months, freezing etc... We go to PC world. Get a new machine. £500.00, with crappy vista. Buy Windows 7 upgrade, cos client cant be arsed to wait for free upgrade disk in post.

Get back to his house. Install windows 7, connect to router, oh shit, router is buggered when connected via wire. Egg on my face.

Ive had similair problems in the past. There are programs you can download to rebuild the TCP-IP stack. This may cure it.

Nice thoughts guys, although it has had a complete OS re-install ruling out any problems with the TCP stuff. The router at his connects to mine which is what puzzels me, and his tower to my network.

Also, the router has been flashed and reset without problems. It's almost like his tower and router have had a tiff. They both get along fine with anything but eachother!!

Dylan - I know what you mean and that is the mistake I would not allow myself to make. I'd rather quit than tell somebody they need a new system and not cure it (although he genuinely does need a new system anyway regardless of this network problem).

gdavies I'll update you if I need help thanks.

without wishing to insult your intelligence have you checked the ethernet lead - are you using a crossover by accident and one or the other hasn't worked it out?

Lol u guessed it. We're completely re-building his system (everything apart from processor) now anyway. the hard drive fails all tests, the mobo's PCI are now down, the memory isn't adequate for Vista in the first place and the DVD writer.. well, DOESN'T!
I'm quite certain his problems all lie within the tower due to this, and also his internet worked first time on my PC. Will update you if he doesn't ;)
