I assume it is someone being trained to drive pulling a trailer. although anyone can drive a vehicle with an L plate on. It is compulsory for someone with a provisional licence, but optional for anybody already licenced.
Driving instructor moving the vehicle between pupils' locations might have a struggle with that...?I vaguely remember the police pulling drivers up if their car had an L plate but no passenger and I'm sure they used to issue tickets if you were a qualified driver but your car was bearing a L plate whilst you were driving.

Indeed, but until the advent of the magnetic ones, they tended to be self-adhesive and/or tie-on. It was quite possible to be stopped, on the suspicion that you might be an unaccompanied provisional licence holder, but I've never heard of anybody ever being sanctioned for displaying an unnecessary L plate - and, in the old days, it was sometimes felt wise to leave the L plates on for a while after passing your test, as a sort of warning, as the voluntary P plates are used now. N plates are compulsory for a two year period post-test in Ireland.Noted but I meant the small L plate signs you attach to your car not the professional instructors.
