What I Did This Weekend - In Pictures!

How did that happen?
Fronds in high places?

So I rebuilt the "Chinaman's Hat" as a strategic spare. Cleaning it up revealed that the top three rivets are "proper ones" and seem to be of stainless steel, where the bottom three were aluminium 'pop' rivets, all of which had corroded away to nothingness. Design by accountants,

Replaced by M6 studs now.

Currently working on a couple of clocks. A Hermle Westminster which just needed a quick once-over and is now ticking away and chiming nicely.

And a cuckoo clock, for someone else, that is proving very difficult. Almost everything is wrong and it's been dismantled and reassembled repeatedly - I think I may have found most of the problems now - we'll see...

Busy decorating the hall, moving the phone, easing the doors, carpet tiling the floor, painting, papering, glueing, sanding, drilling, screwing, filling, I've got so many tools out that I keep losing things in the chaos.

Today's project was to fix a rubber tyre back onto a wheel that supports the weight of a heavy steel gate. Originally, it looks like the tyre was just cast in place and relied on the 'bond' to keep it on the hub - over the years, moisture has wicked into the interface and the tyre has come loose as a result of the film of corrosion that has occurred. It works its way off to one side as the gate is opened and closed.

I 'fixed' it with Araldite a couple of years ago, but it has just separated again. So, this time I have drilled eight 3mm holes into the hub and driven 1/8" rivets into them through the tyre.

We'll see how it survives - I have a feeling that I will be drilling and tapping to fit some screws next time...

Well, the aluminium rivets began to fail after eighteen months, so I've replaced them with steel M4 screws tapped into the wheel. We'll see how they survive..

I have been fettling my dome clock today after it stopped last week. I have some clock oil and thought it might just need a bit of lubrication but on closer inspection there was a deposit of black oil on the escape mechanism so cleaned that at the same time.

After running it without the pendulum for a while it seems to be back to normal. This is the first time I have needed to look at it in two years.

Had a call to say the caravan was damaged in strong winds, so took a ride out to Wales yesterday. Furthest I've ever ridden in one day, and about 5x further than I've ever ridden on my own before! Stopped at Bala to briefly warm my fingers.

I don't understand much about bikes, but that looks lovely.

Stop bragging when you were offered two lifts in enclosed motorbikes with extra wheels :)

And I swam across that bit of water many many years ago :)

Did our annual London run to tend Mrs T's family graves.
Stopped with her wierd racist brother.
I've probably mentioned before it's like an evening with Alf Garnet although this year he's moved his focus from bladdy c**ns and d*rkies to bladdy Eastern Europeans.
He and his wife live in a 'substantial' house in what estate agents would term a leafy suberb on North London with a swimming pool out back. Average house prices £1.5 to £2 mill.
They only have one bed, in their room. So we take a lilo and sleeping bag .
Photo's below of how they live:
Snug which they use most of the time

I think I can see why they're minted!
