Had an hours sledging with neighbours and kids then back to ours for toddy and mulled wine. Someone brought some Swedish stuff, if North Korea got hold of it to power their rockets they could nuke the moon never mind America.

We had a game in Portsmouth so drove down to Birmingham and went on the coach with the rest of the team. I spent the afternoon at my tripod squinting into the monitor at the bottom of the pole of video taken from a camera at the top of the pole. It's all controlled from a joystick with buttons to zoom and stop and start recording.

This was taken just before the kick-off. The opposition were slow in setting up and received a "delay of game" penalty moving the kick-off back 10 yards.

Ten or twelve years ago, a friend told me that B&Q were selling these Makita hammer drill kits at a remarkable price.

It has proven to be a remarkably good investment, though I do need to replace a couple of the smaller drills now. I have recently become aware that the batteries are fading a bit, so I had a look around and bought two 'compatible' batteries, which claimed to be 3Ah, rather than the 1.3Ah that Makita claim for theirs, and considerably cheaper than genuine Makita replacements. The batteries arrived and proved to be every bit as good as they claimed, so I got two more.

Four batteries may seem a bit excessive, but I have, over the years, picked up the matching torch -

I have treated this to an LED bulb. If the batteries really are 3Ah and the LED really does use 1W, then I have two full days use in one charge. The torch has a place for a spare bulb, but I have fitted the original tungsten bulb in as well - so two spares in there now, if the LED ever fails. The torch will stand on its base and the head can be set at 0, 45 & 90 degrees.

I also picked up the matching jigsaw in a case, a couple of years ago, with a charger and a failing battery. The saw has just had a good clean up, it was full of fine sawdust. It's a fearsome device, every bit as good as a reasonable mains saw, though a fair bit heavier to use where the weight is unsupported by the work-piece.

The saw is variable from 500 to 2,800 strokes/minute and has a three-stage pendulum, plus removable extraction duct. It also has the facility to use both modern and old-style blades. I was unhappy when I finally went modern with a new mains saw a few years ago and still had a good stock of the old-style blades.

Also in the shot are a couple of Rabone spirit levels that I rescued from a garage clearance recently - cleaned up nicely and are still accurate, after a couple of decades at the back of a cupboard - and a Sandvik junior hacksaw that is still in progress...

So, I now have the drill set, jigsaw, torch, four new batteries and two chargers - all for about the list price of the drill set at the time that I bought it.

I just need to replace those drills and fix the one dodgy catch on the case, where I accidentally kicked it once.

Sandvik saw handle cleaned up, heated in front of the fire and some shoe polish melted in. I really don't understand why people paint wooden handles, it looks tatty almost immediately and varnish is little better. Some warm wax and then just the contact with skin is a much better system. I suppose somebody who's been on a marketing course pushes for 'corporate branding', but nobody really cares about that.

Why hide that nice beech?

Also salvaged from the garage was a seized-up old portable vice - now freed and lubricated for occasional outdoor use.

This weekend we went up to Hawkshead in the Lake District staying in a gorgeous lodge with log burner and hot tub.
Lots of walking and exploring.

On Saturday we walked round Tarn Hows with its stunning scenery then over to Grizedale in the afternoon.

Photos not brilliant because they were only taken with my phone, but you’ll get the gist.

My brother had put together a display of plastic models ("Airfix" models") at the Barry War Museum to celebrate 100 Years of the RAF, so I went down to help fill a table. (I'm not really a modeller, so I just set up my RAF boardgame - the third photo - and played through a few moves with my nephew.)

Watched Storm Stacey, aged 15,from Eccleshall finish 2nd in a thrilling Motostar 250 race at Oulton Park then burn out what was left of his tyre.

Didn't see any scooters for Trumpet though :)
