A New Front Door

After lots & lots of nagging & fluttering eyelashes, I'm no longer going to have the worst front door on the street as husbands bought a shiny new one - yay!

He thinks that he can fit it himself (omg!), but I'm wondering if there somewhere we can take it to be trimmed to size - its very slightly to long, & maybe get the letterbox cut......& maybe even the lock cut/fitted...

So, is there anywhere that can do any of this?

Fitting a door is doable - obviously, there are people that have done it - but, it is not easy - there is the question of cutting it to the right size, fitting the lock(s) and the letter-box - and the hinges need to be accurately done, too..

I take it that it is a wooden door?

Yes, sorry, should of said - a wooden door. He has fitted internal doors, so is confident on doing the hinges...he's fitted handles too & swapped locks on doors, but not had to put a new lock on a door before.

I was sure there used to be somewhere that you could take things to be trimmed to size though....

Don't B&Q trim to size on the trade counter?

Answered my own question really because if they did then he would have done it....

Decent wood should never be painted!
You are probably right.

I have never had a painted door although I do have a penchant for red and yellow doors.

I love the house in Brocton by the green with the yellow door.
It's just so welcoming.

I said exactly that to him! I can't remember why (I wasn't listening), but they don't do doors...

I can't think where they are, but there are 2 painted doors that are lovely - one is a super shiny black & the other is duck-egg blue, both have silver/chrome door fittings that really make them stand out.

I visited a town in the Netherlands where everyone on the housing estate where i stayed had to have the same colour front door, garage door too. If someone wanted to change the colour, everyone had to agree to change theirs also.

This was some number of whiles ago - it's now the only thing i remember about the entire town. I can't even remember what that colour then was.

Me And My Door.

The houses on this estate in Eccleshall were required to maintain red external doors for the first seven years - it has started breaking down now that the limit has expired..

I do remember one other thing.

The family i was staying with had a daughter - about four/five years old i think - who was already fluent in English. Only the English of the songs of Madonna, mind - she could sing them word perfect. I don't think she understood what many, if any, of the words actually meant, but it was obviously impressive enough for my remembrance.

This has nothing to do with the town itself, which remains an entire blank in my mind. Nor has it much, if anything, to do with new front doors.

Nothing amusing has ever happened to me in connection to a door.

You are welcome to come & *spectate at 'the fitting of the door', going on previous DIY experience - many amusing things will happen, some will be downright dangerous or just plain stupid, if you're not familiar with Stokie swear words then you're guaranteed to learn some new ones at a very loud volume & you will also get the chance to see how to correctly kick or punch inanimate objects...

*I'm hoping to sell enough tickets to pay for another new front door & a carpenter to fit it.....
