Animal rights - are they serious? Animal research & sustainable meat

After reading this article, I'm a little confused:

A supermarket has defended selling squirrel meat as a "sustainable" form of food, amid protests by animal activists who accused him of cashing in on a "wildlife massacre".

Apart from the cute factor, whats the big ******* deal? They are pests, they aren't even meant to be in this country so from the animal kingdoms point of view they need to be destroyed. We already cull them, and rightly so, so why not eat them? Surely if we're going to kill the little sods anyway, we should eat them as well to avoid waste? In fact, eating these saves another animals life.

They really don't think things through do they.

I wonder if a reduction in benefits would reduce the number of activists, as they'd start looking at eating real food themselves instead of processed fungus?

EDIT: For the record I like animals, preferably when grilled. Animal rights activists I only like when they're silent, and don't stand too close.

I'm all for animal rights but we have to use a little common sense. Ok so setting fire to live squirrels is bad, we can call agree on that.

Killing them humanely and eating them, not so.

Animal rights activists are a special breed (special in more than one way I think!) and thankfully there aren't too many of them - they do more harm than good.

It's a good job political parties don't try to win you over to their cause in the same way animal rights activists do, else we'd all be covered in brown's dribble, clegg spooge and whatever it is that makes cameron's head so shiny.

My understanding is that squirrels are veggies and as a general rule the meat we tend to eat is also from veggie animals so in my book they are fair game, they are also annoying pests just like pigeons and gulls......

Squirrel pasties
140g squirrel meat cut into 1cm cubes; 100g sliced potato; 100g sliced swede; 50g diced onion; 30g smoked bacon;
15g chopped hazelnuts; 75g butter; 5g chopped parsley; a good pinch of salt and pepper.

Method
Egg wash edges of pastry circles.
Place the potato, swede, hazelnuts, parsley and seasoning on to each circle followed by the bacon, squirrel meat
and, finally, the onion.
Place butter in each pasty, then fold over the pastry and crimp the edges.
Put the pasties on to a greaseproof baking tray, egg wash both pasties well, place in a pre-heated oven at
180C or gas mark 5.
Bake for 45-50 minutes. The juices should start to boil and the pasties should be able to move on the tray with ease.

And what evidence and rational argument do you base that on? I fear some sections of society may see making outlandish statements such as these as being a result of a person possessing exactly those qualities.

Probably a result of reading the Daily Mail...
