I eventually upgraded to Lion. Despite there being a few things I don't like, on the whole its been ok. You do have to get used to "Versions" which automatically saves your documents for you. There is no "Save as" option with Versions, you have to duplicate a document before editing if you don't want to change the original. This is only for Apple applications at the moment but it wouldn't surprise me if independent developers will adopt it.
Expose is also changed but I feel it works better. You can have multiple desktops (a la Spaces) but you aren't limited to four. It seems to work easier once you get your head around it.
If you have a Trackpad then you will benefit from Lion. I recently bought a Magic Mouse (upgrading from a Mighty Mouse) and that has limited gestures but I use them a lot. I will eventually buy a Trackpad.
Mountain Lion will again only be available from the Mac App Store...
...and Apple are changing the way software updates are handled. The application Software Update will be disappearing and all updates will be handled via the Mac App Store. I think this includes independent applications as well.
that sounds incredibly annoying.. or do you mean that it incrementally saves changes to a document when you hit "save", so that you can roll back to an old version of a document from, say, a week ago if you have since saved over it a dozen times and made a balls-up of it? if that's the case, it sounds quite handy.. although i would still miss "Save As", but like you say - just getting used to a new workflow, innit..
ah, thanks:
Apple said:Versions automatically records the history of a document as you create and make changes to it. OS X Lion automatically creates a new version of a document each time you open it and every hour while you’re working on it. You can also create snapshots of a document whenever you like. With an interface similar to that of Time Machine, Versions shows you the current document next to a cascade of previous versions, allowing you to do side-by-side comparisons of your working document with past versions. You can restore entire past versions, or bring elements from past versions such as pictures or text into your working document.
