wow! spaces and expose have been transformed and are now excellent. utterly excellent. worth the £21 alone.

Edit: now known collectively as 'mission control'

Not updating at the moment as my iTunes account doesn't have enough credit on it.

Not sure if it will be of benefit as I don't have a magic trackpad on my MacBook Pro.

so.. i've been using 10.6 quite happily since it was released, and currently see no reason to upgrade.. i've only used Lion briefly, once, and didn't like it - things weren't where i was expecting them to be (e.g. the Library folder was missing, functions keys did different things, etc.), stuff like that..

however, it seems more and more apple are pulling their usual "stuff won't work from now on unless you have 10.7 or higher..." trick..

are there any compelling reasons to upgrade to 10.7? i haven't found anything that i use that has needed it so far, but i realise that that is the direction apple is heading..

do we know if there will be a direct upgrade path from 10.6 to 10.8 Mountain Lion, or will you have to have 10.7 first? if it's the former, i figure i might as well just wait until 10.8 is released, innit..

fyi, i have no other apple devices (e.g. no ipod, iphone, ipad, etc.) so i won't be used icloud or anything (dropbox is the shiznit, as far as i'm concerned)..

fanboys - convince me! :keke:

I eventually upgraded to Lion. Despite there being a few things I don't like, on the whole its been ok. You do have to get used to "Versions" which automatically saves your documents for you. There is no "Save as" option with Versions, you have to duplicate a document before editing if you don't want to change the original. This is only for Apple applications at the moment but it wouldn't surprise me if independent developers will adopt it.

Expose is also changed but I feel it works better. You can have multiple desktops (a la Spaces) but you aren't limited to four. It seems to work easier once you get your head around it.

If you have a Trackpad then you will benefit from Lion. I recently bought a Magic Mouse (upgrading from a Mighty Mouse) and that has limited gestures but I use them a lot. I will eventually buy a Trackpad.

If you upgrade, it will take a little time getting used to Lion. You do though, and I think its worth it for compatibility alone.

Mountain Lion will again only be available from the Mac App Store and Apple are changing the way software updates are handled. The application Software Update will be disappearing and all updates will be handled via the Mac App Store. I think this includes independent applications as well.

that sounds incredibly annoying.. or do you mean that it incrementally saves changes to a document when you hit "save", so that you can roll back to an old version of a document from, say, a week ago if you have since saved over it a dozen times and made a balls-up of it? if that's the case, it sounds quite handy.. although i would still miss "Save As", but like you say - just getting used to a new workflow, innit..

never used it - 21.5" is plenty for me - so that's here nor there for me..

i love my magic mouse, and used the page forward/backward swipe all the time, but i really missed the proper scroll wheel so have gone back to an old microsoft corded optical wheel mouse.. you only really miss it if you are also a PC user - it never really bothered me, until i would go to work, and i found that the shitty microsoft corded mouse that came free with the dell box i use at work was more comfortable and easier to use than the magic mouse :|

so yeah, i'm thinking of buying a decent cordless mouse with scroll wheel, and then an apple magic trackpad - i can imagine using the mouse with your right hand and the trackpad with your left makes for quite a pleasant user experience :)

or other, less legitimate sources ;)

sounds good to me.. i recently installed textwrangler, which i downloaded from their website.. i then found that it could also be found in the mac app store, and i wished i had have installed it via that method, so that i would automatically be prompted for updates, etc.. i do like the idea of having a central repository for all software :)

ah, thanks:

Apple said:
Versions automatically records the history of a document as you create and make changes to it. OS X Lion automatically creates a new version of a document each time you open it and every hour while you’re working on it. You can also create snapshots of a document whenever you like. With an interface similar to that of Time Machine, Versions shows you the current document next to a cascade of previous versions, allowing you to do side-by-side comparisons of your working document with past versions. You can restore entire past versions, or bring elements from past versions such as pictures or text into your working document.

so yeah, it sounds just like i thought.. handy! defo not enough to make me take the plunge though lol..
