Broadband options for ST16?

looks like i will be moving to a house that isn't covered by virgin media, so for the first time in decades i will have to go ADSL :(

what are people's experiences of non-cable internet services in stafford? anyone that provides decent speeds? i'm so used to 20mbps that i just take it for granted - i think i would genuinely struggle with anything below 1MB/s :|

I'm in the vicinity of Newport Road and I get 3.5 down and about 0.7 up - to be fair, I do have the option of cable or FTC though but prefer paying £10 a month for phone line and unlimited internet to move.

Whereabouts are you going in ST16 I thought you were already there now?

BT Infinity is the only alternative to cable, ADSL is just not an option unless you live inside the exchange.

perhaps i'm just "used" to it, so can't imagine a slower service, but why on earth would you choose to pay more for a vastly reduced service? as per the screenshot above, i get over 2MB/s down and over 1MB/s up (yes, megabytes) and i'm on the same street as you!

costs less than £20 a month.. why would choose to pay BT line rental then internet on top of that, for a much crappier service? :?:

ah, so is infinity not ADSL? i just assumed it was some magical, superspeed variant of it.. is that not the case? does that mean, if/when i am infinity enabled, i would be able to get it without having a BT line?

i haven't had a landline phone in at least 6 years, so i'm aggrieved at having to pay BT line rental for a line i'll never use, just cos i have to have crappy ADSL

Sorry, perhaps wasn't clear earlier... i get Sky telephone (line rental) and sky unlimited broadband for £10 per month (all in total).

If anyone can find phone and broadband for less than £10 then please let me know, but usually line rental is £13-£15 on its own....

So yes my 3.5Mb is slow, but I don't use it that much that i'd want to pay double and add a bit for FTC.

Mine is TalkTalk. Twenty three quid a month, I think, but that's all calls, including international.

ah, no you defo didn't make that clear!! although i'll be gutted to lose 20mbps cable internet, using various "postcode checkers" it seems as if i can expect in the region of 7mbps from ADSL in the new house, which isn't bad - especially if it's only a tenner a month..

thing is, the cheapest deal i can find on the sky website reckons it is £14.50 for the line rental alone (i.e. before you stick any TV/internet charges on top).. how come yours is only a tenner, all in?

can anyone confirm how much they pay, in total, for their sky broadband? as mentioned above, all the deals on their website seem to suggest that you have to pay £14.50 line rental on top of all of their packages.. is that the case?

The price I get (£10 for line rental, free evening and weekend calls and unlimited bb) is the "I would like to cancel my sky account please because it's too expensive" price....

The £14.50 line rental plus whatever on top for bb / tv is probably right, probably not the cheapest, but there are nearly always offers on whether that is M&S vouchers, refer a friend or quidco/topcashback etc....

ah right - i did wonder.. i've checked all the usual sites (hukd, quidco, topcashback, etc.) - they all have various deals/cashback, but all of them have the mandatory £14.50 line rental.. looks like my only option is £22 a month ("broadband unlimited" + line rental), and hope that it gets somewhere near the promised speed :(

mind you, i suppose i could play the "no thanks, if i have to pay line rental, i might as well just get my internet from BT" card and see where that gets me!

Shameless self-promotion alert;

Over the last few years, we've been deploying a lot of microwave connection gear around the Midlands.

If you had a need for a 10-20Mbps domestic broadband connection (or up to 100Mbps commercial!) in the middle of nowhere, we've delivered connections like that before.

We're more BT Infinity (domestic) or leased line/SDSL (commercial) equivalent price-wise.
If anyone wanted to ask any questions then I'd be more than happy to answer or advise where possible.

I'm hoping to do a test with my laptop at Stafford Castle shortly - I'll let you know what speed we can get up there.
