Majority of the vans out and about at the moment will be involved in pulling fibre.
You seem to know what you're talking about... If we've got new cabinets fixed, what is left to do/how long will it take?
Fit the cabinets out, ensure the backhaul to the exchange is in place, test etc.

I'd be very suprised it they are live before March. They don't finish a cabinet and then "make it live" they will wait till their pre-determined launch date and then availability will come online together.

Not convinced Wildwood will be done by March as they only surveyed the cabs last week.

I assume all the diggery-pokery on Wildwood Drive is fibre installation? They seem to be making quite a good fist of it so far but they have a long way to go.

Nope, that's a high voltage cable which keeps faulting the spark contractors are replacing.

You won't see them digging up vast trenches for the fibre as they will run it through existing ducting. The visible work will be around the cabs where they run a cable between the copper and fibre cab and power to the fibre cab.

Ah - i'm not, as you can see, au fait with these things.
I did wonder myself when they started digging, if they were putting in the power for the fibre cab. Made enquiries with the digger men who were concerned the cables aren't due to be jointed until the middle of this week and the cable may "go missing".

What did the "100mb e-mail" say?

I saw this and assumed they mistakenly sent an e-mail out saying everyone was getting 100 meg.

As far as I know though, they are still planning to double speeds...
Full story here: http://uk.news.yahoo.com/virgin-sorry-broadband-mix-101210905.html

Seems all 50Mb customers will get 120Mb now!
Just had a letter through, getting 100Mb as soon as the local exchange is rolled out (18 months to do the country, no idea where we fall) and then an extra 20Mb after the summer. Assuming I get it by the summer I guess? I dunno, will I even notice the difference really? Will go to 900MB a minute but what would I use it for? Will I get 12Mb/s uploads I wonder, be great for streaming to the phone should I want to watch a movie at work!

Interestingly I just came across this:-

An exchange is considered "FTTC enabled" when 80% of the cabinets it serves (the cabinet is the point on your street where the internet is brought in) are also enabled. Unfortunately that means that 20% of cabinets can't provide FTTC even if your exchange, and most of the area, can get the service.

http://www.eclipse.net.uk/fibre-broadband/faq

- If thats the case, and BT are on target with their 1st March date for the Stafford exchange - then you'd have to be in the unlucky 20% not to have it available...

Just to clarify something but if you are in Weeping Cross, Wildwood or further south you are likely to be on the Milford exchange. They aren't getting upgraded till June.

Bit of an update ...

I had an email today from PlusNet saying that fibre optic was enabled in my area and I should call them to upgrade.

Granted I thought it's a few months off but I thought I might get a date out of them so I called. Went through the upgrade with the chap at the other end and rather surprisingly I now have an engineer coming round on the 17th February between 1 pm and 6 pm to install my fibre optic broadband.

I will of course only be 100% I'm getting it after next Friday but things are looking good at the moment :D

Hi,

AOL are not currently one of the providers pro-actively offering Fibre Broadband, Talk Talk is offering it but it isn't competitive in price.

Location wise I'm living at the end of Silkmore Crescent.

My current broadband is £16.50 with PlusNet (up to 20 meg speed, 20 gig download limit) as I'm on an old account type with the add-on for priority on their network. The new fibre account is the same amount, with a 40 gig download limit but doesn't have the priority on the network (that's an extra £5).

There is also a £25 connection fee and it's £6 for them to send you the router that you'll need (router and modem are separate).

As WildwoodPaul mentioned your ISP has to offer the fiber optic option and there isn't an automatic upgrade. An engineer visit is required as BT supply the fibre modems and put a new faceplate on your master phone socket which they sort out when you ring about upgrading.

It will be a good thing when broadband is upgraded, especially for the smaller business parks on the outskirts of stafford. We as a small company will certainly upgrade when the time comes

My address is shown as ready and I order Infinity today for installation on 1st March, presumably the switch on day.

My number comes up with "by 31st March 2012". Just got to see what my existing provider will offer (otherwise it may be time to switch providers).
