tesco have always had these, afaik.. my sister has had at least 3 tickets through the post from tesco - she's fast running out of excuses to get out of paying them lol..

i know what you mean, though - i saw them being installed at the tesco entrance/exit (as part of their overall car park revamp) recently, so i assume they are just relocating them, or putting more efficient ones in..

spotted the front asda ones early this week, and a van was parked up with some chaps installing the rear ("trade only" lol) ones yesterday (tuesday) at about 17:00..

Tesco have had a sign up implying number plate recognition for some years - but it used to say that you had three hours, I'm sure, not that I park in Tesco or ASDA very often..

There was a restriction on returning to Tesco within a specified time, also. I remember a case of a chap getting a 'penalty' when he took back a faulty product that he'd just bought a little earlier in the day - I believe that that one was waived, though - after a bit of effort..

Between which times is the system active?

Is it legal for the private sector to use ANPR? I thought that's only for police use? They'd normally have to take a photo of the car and apply to the DVLA for your details.

What if you have a James Bond style number plate changer/concealer just for when you drive into ASDA? It's not a public highway after all.

...not that I'm bothered. There'd be no reason for me to stay in the ASDA carpark over 2 hours anyway.

I believe that it is not against the law to have more than one number plate on a vehicle, as long as you do have the genuine one in a legal position - you could have a dozen, or more, other plates that were not related to your vehicle, that might confuse them...

As far as I understand it, these charges through the post from Tesco / Asda are nothing more than "requests for payment" and can be discarded in the nearest recycling bin without concern....

(*take advice before taking my advice though)

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/PersonalisedRegAndNumberPlates/DG_181503 says...

"What could happen if you display incorrect number plates

The police can issue fixed penalty fines for illegally displayed number plates. Offenders could face a maximum fine of £1,000 and in some cases the number plate may be withdrawn.
Vehicles with illegally displayed number plates may fail the MOT test."
...so I wouldn't chance it.
Is that not referring to weird fonts, incorrect spacing and sizes, etc., rather than just a random plate that is not actually related to that vehicle?..

I suppose they'ld have you for attempting to pervert the course of justice..

What would happen if a car transporter was carrying a broken down car? When it passed an ANPR camera, then both plates would be visible...

What happens if you take longer than two hours to do your shopping at Tesco or Asda?

What happens if the camera doesn't pick up that you leave and then return an hour or so later because you've forgotten something and gets you on the way out the second time?

What happens if Tesco and Asda don't install crap like this and reduce prices instead? Sorry, daft question as that will never happen.

Then you're obviously taking too long as you're using up their precious heat, light and car parking space for someone else who has money to give them.

I would hope that the system would start the stopwatch when you enter and stop it when you leave and add up the time in the period allowable. I agree, this seems too much to ask lol.

Which vehicle would the system recognise here? Or both, perhaps...

And, what would happen if your vehicle fails to start and is not recovered within the allowable time?

As has already been discussed, Tesco used to be 3 hours - has it been reduced?

And the rear entrance to ASDA, can this no longer be used?

I wondered whether this entrance was the reason for the cameras when I saw them being installed. No doubt there will be a fine for those of us who are "unofficial" deliveries.

Perhaps if you spend so long in the shop and obviously spend a large amount of money during that time you could be eligible for some discount loyalty vouchers off your fine ;)

There was a newsletter article some years ago about a disabled couple who had taken over 2 hours to do their shopping at tesco and had been fined - I believe this is why the limit went up to 3 hours at Tesco. I hope the back entrance to Asda doesn't get cut off - I usually use it as it's slightly more convenient to get to. Plus there is a huge "welcome to asda" sign when you come in that way. I don't use it to leave though but I know a lot of people do despite the "no left turn" markings. I guess with parking becoming less and less in Stafford the supermarkets are having to be more vigilant. Though to be fair if I use a supermarket car park and do shopping in the town centre as well I never stay over the time limit anyway.

Unless the ticket is issued by the council or police, you can file it in the nearest bin. These ANPR systems are normally run by private companies like Excell. Just ignore them, do not enter into any correspondence with them, NEVER pay in the hope you can later appeal. They are nothing but crooks and thieves playing on peoples fears and ignorance of law.

Me and t'mother have been saying for years about the general mentality of some folk around here... For example, we have come to the conclusion that if you're in a car at a junction on a busy road and someone slows down to let you out, they're not from these parts! And don't get me started on Christmas shopping.
