I imagine this scathing assessment of Sweden's coronavirus response published last month will put a stop to people evoking them in anti-lockdown arguments, right?

... right?!

Yeah, but a bloke in the pub said that's just the narrative forced by Biden's lizard wizards. And he had proof, but I won't share it with you. Wake up sheeple!

The strange side effects of Covid. During lockdowns people found all sorts of ways of relieving boredom, amusing themselves, exercising, destressing ... This resulted in a significant increase in people seeking medical treatment. DIY projects resulted in injuries caused by hand or power tools, adults using children's playground equipment resulted in an suprising number of injuries (including to 8 people over 90). There was a noticeable upward trend in injuries from unfortunate encounters from new pets (dogs, cats, rats, spiders and another 90 year old was admitted to hospital after being bitten by a crocodile/alligator (she seemed unsure which). None of these were officially recorded as covid related though. On the positive side increases in gardening and outdoor diy projects resulted in an increase in archaeological finds reported under the Portable Antiquities Scheme.

I lost interest as soon as I read “anti-vaxxers”!!!
We are past that stupidity!!
If there had been a third line, would it have had just one exclamation mark!?! Diminishing returns... there's a law there somewhere!!!

Indulge me - if 'anti-vaxxer' ist verboten, what would be your preferred nomenclature?

Please tell me it's some unholy bullshit like 'Truther' or some such, coz then i could laugh at you even harder than i was planning to.

All that robbing yourself of oxygen is effecting your brain! I'll explain it again, shall I? An anti-vaxxer per se is somebody who is anti vaccine. Somebody who has cottoned onto what is going on now is somebody who has assessed the situation that we have been dealt and made their own decisions. There's a little click on here that take huge gratification in sniping, name calling and picking holes in things that one person says, while similar views are held by millions out there in the real world.
You seem to have forgotten this is also an open forum for airing views rather than a science lab, where what the popular kids say, is gospel!

There is a lot to unpick in that...

An anti-vaxxer per se is somebody who is anti vaccine.

Well that's self-evident...

Somebody who has cottoned onto what is going on now is somebody who has assessed the situation that we have been dealt and made their own decisions

Well that just sounds like anti-vaxxer with extra steps...

All that robbing yourself of oxygen is effecting your brain!

Just one exclamation mark? Apart from that, what does this refer to? What is the mechanism that is 'robbing' my brain of oxygen?

You object to the term 'anti-vaxxer', yet your explanation as to why you object to it seems to consist entirely of explaining exactly what an 'anti-vaxxer' actually is.

How hilarious that he with the "I'll try to be nicer if you stop being an idiot" avatar complains about people pointing out that his idiotic nonsense is idiotic nonsense.

Your problem is very few people are religious nowadays, the times of blindly believing without proof are gone. I work in data, my job is literally to prove things, you don't just chuck out theories you need to be able to say why. I can say why with covid, I can't say why with covid deniers because they always without fail refuse to provide evidence and try to move any probing questions onto another thread of their denial. No evidence to me means no chance I'll believe, if I fell for that nonsense I'd be a mormon.

That and most global conspiracies can be shut down immediately when you realise that every country in the world would not play well together, one would 'let slip' as it were. Israel and Palestine, happy to kill each others kids but hey why not work together on this fake virus. North Korea? China? And if for that matter it was a lab escape from China the USA would be all over that, not playing along and helping them cover it all up. The UK? Then we have Russia, now they are an odd one, as it seems a lot of the anti covid stuff does come from Russia. Maybe they are the good guys after all! Oh, Ukraine, maybe not.

Just to add, I wholeheartedly agree that everyone has a right to an opinion. I also believe that everyone has a right to question that opinion, otherwise the truth becomes very difficult to determine. If you voice your opinion be prepared to discuss it, if you can't say why you believe something be prepared to have people think you lie. Everybody has a right to respond to your opinion, if you can't take that response thats your problem not theirs.

An example, I have some magic beans for sale. Will you buy them on the strength of my word? I made the statement that they are magic, where does the burden of proof lie?

The thing is, gilbert is presenting what he is saying as an opinion.
But then what he is saying is, for example, "there is no evidence that masks reduce transmission".
That is not an opinion, it's either true or false and if he's shown that it's false then he presents that as people not respecting his right to an opinion, which isn't what is happening.

I suspect one element of the indoctrination of people into these kind of alt-right conspiracy theories is the weaponisation of feeling ostracized. It actually benefits their mindset to be shot down for utter nonsense because it strengthens their belief that the entire world is blind and only THEY and their kind have access to the truth. The comparison you've made to a dogmatically religious mindset is correct, it's almost exactly the same thing.

Of course, that raises the question of whether you *should* dispute these arguments but, as someone else has previously said, you don't know who else may be reading that might take something spurious as the truth and pass it on if proper context is not provided.

I kind of like Professor Brian Cox's thinking on opinions:

“The problem with today’s world is that everyone believes they have the right to express their opinion AND have others listen to it.

The correct statement of individual rights is that everyone has the right to an opinion, but crucially, that opinion can be roundly ignored and even made fun of, particularly if it is demonstrably nonsense!”

I agree with the above, and find it hysterical when people think their opinion is automatically just as valid as everyone else's. No, your right to an opinion is, your actual opinion is not. Every opinion is valid is just the adult equivalent of every kid gets a medal.
