Do you think men and women are equal?

How many men are primary school teachers?
More than you might think, and even more are keen to join them.
Still only 12%, and a quarter of all primary schools have no male teachers at all. John wheeldon have at least one though, and he is very good by all accounts.
Do you think this is because male teachers aren't employed or because many males choose not to go into primary teaching? There is a element of assisting little one's with runny noses, tears and cutting up food at meal times, unlike in secondary, this could be something that doesn't appeal to everyone, rather than there being no job opportunities for men. I teach in secondary and there seems to be quite a balanced mix of male and female, with men choosing D&T IT Art and Sports.

There will always be inequalities. And discrimination. For easy examples look at sport with two competitions - one for women, one for men.
Or look at sentencing in courts - men more likely to be treated more severly. And in domestic disputes, who gets taken away from the marital home, who is more likely to get custody of kids?
Every circumstance different, unless you sat in every court case and reviewed the evidence you couldn't prove who got the worse sentence and as for women getting custody of the kids.... when men can carry them round for nine months and give birth then they should be considered for custody!

Physically and mentally women are not the same. In some ways they are not equal, but that shouldn't mean opportunity & rights should be any different. What a boring asexual world it would be if both sexes were completely equal and thought the same. Some 'mens' jobs will never be attractive to all women, equally the same of 'women's' jobs.

People should be given jobs on ability and merit and based on no other reason.

Gosh I see I've started something here!
What do you all think about the way we raise our children?
We give girls dolls and dress them in pink and play 'mummys and daddys' and we give boys cars and diggers.
Isnt it us that have created and are reinforcing these stereotypes and roles (that the majority have said should be different)

If only! Most children these days are too busy on their x boxes, laptops, mobiles and iPads to be playing mummies and daddies!

I was disussing this just before xmas to someone. Part of my job at the min involves a heavy amount of research on the internet. Out of thousands of large scale companies (employing 6 or more top level management) around 99% of that management team are all male.

With the highest teenage pregnancy rates in Europe it appears our young ones are more than playing mummies and daddies!!!

No, I don't think they do. I think they should but sadly in practice this doesn't always happen.

Is that due to discrimination or the lack of suitable female candidates?
