Now it's been cleared of excessive green stuff, the mound looks suspiciously man-made. Has the area been examined or assessed by archaeologists?

I thought most or even all doxey marshes was made. Isn`t the marshes the result of a filled in quarry of sorts ?

There has been some very limited extraction, resulting in the flashes, etc. - but the Marshes are largely just that - marsh, meadow, flood plain, amenity area, swamp, development opportunity, etc..

If the quagmire is as deep as it seems, how did they ever manage to build a railway across it, and where/how where did the foundations come from? River sow navigable?

It's called civil engineering- the Brits have been rather good at it over the years

Perhaps a more pertinent question would be Why have the council started building the new bypass before buying up the land ?

Despite the worst efforts of Stafford Borough Council, and others, to let developments eat away at the edges of our magnificent marshes, it still continues to attract visitors from far and wide. Today, I bumped into a couple who had chosen to include it in their holiday itinerary, all the way from Australia.
