When we bought our first house back in 1981 (and one and only house we bought in Stafford, we lived in it 41 years) it listed the sq footage of every room and whole house on the estate agents leaflet.

We used our garage to park the car in at the old house all the time. Used to buy cars to fit . Much easier jumping in a car which wasn't misted or iced up.

Missing the garage to park the car in this house. It's got a garage , but part of it has been converted into an extension to the utility room so not long enough. I use the smaller garage (accessible from the utility room) as my cold storage for my hoards of 'special offer' ciders :D

Cars have been getting bigger. The VW Polo became the size of a Golf. Look at what a Toyota Yaris is these days, much larger than before.

I wish we’d go back to it, maybe we’d stop getting shoebox bedrooms that can barely hold a bed.

That's something else, most houses I looked at had a master bedroom then the other 2 were the exact same size. Usually about 12-16sqm but never the UK standard of one real double, one at a push and one I hope your second kid was a midget!

Reason most people don't put their car in the garage is that they need the space for storage. UK houses appear to be significantly smaller than their continental equivalents and one of the things that is skimped on is storage.

UK houses are on average 71 square meters smaller than our European counterparts

I'd never buy a new build because of this. My home at the moment is a 1935 build, bug enough but a pain to do any improvements to.

Yep, we call our garage the shed ! but to be honest at one point there was 4 bikes, 2 sets of golf clubs, an electric golf trolley, a freezer and other bits and pieces in there so even a "proper shed" wouldn't have worked

In latvia they vaguely mention there's another building in the garden with a sauna in it, like it's an obvious thing to expect! It all comes down to land I guess, they have lots of it so building bigger houses has less cost, but in reality the land is only a portion of the overall cost and in the UK we just get ripped off.

Just saw this one, good size for the money but looks like it was used as a porn studio!
