Forum chat room

I think we should have a chat room in this forum, at the moment there are 7 people on line all waiting for something to read so they might have an answer. Instead we should all be chatting. Give us more of a chance to get to know each other.

I thought about this a while ago, and decided against it as I thought it would result in people exhausting their need for chat in the Chat Room and thus would have a negative impact on the threads posted on The Forum. If enough people want one, however, I will be more than happy to have a crack at it! :)

Good idea for a poll, labcm. Stafford point awarded purely for taking the plunge and making use of this seemingly forgotten function!

Your welcome and thank you. If it gets out of hand, as some can, then maybe there should be a ban rule. To save favouritism ban both (or more parties) after, say 3 warnings, maybe less or more. Up to you, just a thought. You are admin and what you say goes. I can also get carried away so I know what it's like. Maybe a 24 hour ban should come into force (within reason) and you seem to be pretty fair and not to be too petty. You decide. Just an Idea. Far be it from me to teach my grandmother how to suck eggs.

Well, that's the thing; if I were to implement a Chat Room, it would almost certainly be unmoderated. Obviously, I would have ability to ban people, or take action retrospectively, but there is no way I would be able to monitor what goes on in there 24 hours a day.

I don't see that as too much of a problem, though. As I say, I was just concerned about it detracting from The Forum and the last thing I want to see is a drop in the number of threads posted! I suppose it could always work in its favour, however; discussions in the Chat Room could easily prompt threads on The Forum, etc.

I'll have a look at how plausible it is, and see what I can come up with. :)

Well that's all we could ask for. I know what you mean about seeing a drop in the number of threads posted. Sometimes risks have to be taken. The fact that your looking into it is brilliant. If it doesn't work then 'Ho Hum'. Life goes on. we love the forum anyway, go back to normal.

I would expect that if a chat room were set up which was viewable by registered users and guests but only users could chat, this would encourage more guests to sign up. Anyone else's view?

Admin, if you're hand-rolling this chat room:
1. You're a braver one than me.
2. Don't forget the /ignore function. :)

What would be the benefits of a chat room? I've never used one and I'm not sure it would get through the works internet rules. At the moment it's great to be able to pop in when I'm free and catch up on everything then go away again.

I agree - it should be only for forum members but it would be a good way to get to know people more and talk about on going issues around the boro' - I only know about 4 people on here

There's been a few forum members lurking around tonight who, I'm sure would love to chat. For the ones who vote against it, mind telling us why. Would like to know your reasons too.

In my experince there's never anyone in them - even when others are online.

Regular meet ups though...

That's not a reason not to have one though. People should be given the option. If they don't like chat rooms they don't have to go in.

Can you explain what and how and why? I don't really understand the concept. . .
have you ever used MSN messenger? it's a bit like that, except a group chat.. so, being in the chat room is a bit like contributing to one big thread, except it's real time (as in the messages appear as you type them; no refreshing is required) and the messages disappear forever when you close the window..

they're good for if people want to chat, but don't really have anything to say, if you know what i mean.. like, nothing worth making a thread about, but they still want to wax lyrical..
