Forum chat room

I would have little use for a chat-room facility, but, if others do, then far be it from me to vote that they shouldn't have one available. Cliqueiness is almost a compulsory hurdle to be overcome when joining any established community - it took me four months from joining to produce my first post.

I voted yes as I feel there would be benefits, mainly those which admin outlined earlier. I doubt I would use it though, I prefer the threaded discussions on the forum. Not against it, but would be unlikely to use it. Besides, most people on here who I would chat to, and more to the point those who would want to chat to me ( :P ) I have on friendface.

My experience of chat rooms is limited to the descriptions in the wonderful Daily Mail - they are clearly the work of the devil..

would you really want this to happen?

Tis worth a trial run in the future at least. Theres generally a really good level of activity on the Forum, i do think it would see plenty of use.

In some ways, when people are just going into random chat and derailing a thread (which most of us do from time to time) it might be a handy way of "dropping out" from the thread. Having said that, people would also discuss thread subjects in chat, then go back later to the thread and it would appear that there were "gaps" of information missing if somebody else came along.

And for that reason... I'm out!

I wouldn't use it.

Cliqueness and Forums are par for the course.

Offtopic/random/shite posts and Forums are par for the course.

Just ignore it if it bothers you, just like you would with people down the pub who 'act up'.

This forum is no worse than most for this and better than many.

Again just like down the pub, once you get to know people's personas, you get used to it and it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

I've voted no. I don't see many people using it. I rarely use chatrooms nowadays. Prefer the likes of twitter and facebook to interact with people.

So what's the point?.......
It makes the forum threads more conversation like rather than a staccato debate.

One would imagine it would be more chatty and less formal (if that's possible!)

Is that a Moomin?
I've also voted nay. Its already hard enough hiding from all my gmail and facebook stalkers.

A "shoutbox" works pretty well on another forum I frequent - it's not a full on chat room.. no "xyz as entered the chat / has left chat etc." it's just a place at the bottom for things which don't warrant a complete thread.

Can I just remind everyone of my post from yesterday:

In addition, there are a million other things that The Forum desperately needs that are beyond my technical ability, so a chat room would not be a priority even if it was appropriate, I'm afraid!
By all means continue to discuss the various merits/pitfalls of chat-rooms, but we won't be having one here I'm afraid. :)

Excellent; all of your points are basically how I have always viewed things, and it's nice to know that you consider Stafford Forum to be slightly better than average with regards to "nonsense". Thanks, John. :)
