Fox hunting

Thank you for your email about the Statutory Instrument (SI) to amend the Hunting Act 2004. This has now been withdrawn.

The SI does not repeal the Hunting Act. At present, for the purposes of control of foxes, it is permitted under the Hunting Act 2004 for up to two dogs to ‘flush out’ foxes which are then shot. This SI would permit more than two dogs to be used in ‘appropriate terrain’ by which I believe was meant upland and heavily forested areas.

The reason for the bringing forward of the SI was given as the concerns principally of hill farmers, particularly in Wales, who are losing substantial numbers of lambs to foxes.

My position is that the Hunting Act 2004 is established law. I would not support any vote to repeal it or to change it in any way contrary to its main aims. I do support a review of the Act, now that it has been in force for more than a decade, to look at its effect and whether any changes are required to improve it.

My view on the SI (now withdrawn) was that the wording was ill-defined and would be difficult to interpret and hence enforce. This is never a good basis for any legislation and hence I did not support it.

Yours sincerely,

Jeremy
