Geocaching in and around Stafford

Have got quite hooked to this, you wouldn't believe the number of "caches" (like little treasure chests) hidden in the Stafford area.

Have a look at www.geocaching.com to see a map of where the caches are hidden and you can get a free app for your iPhone by searching for Geocaching.

Does anyone else on here partake?

Just got a few devices for the college, gonna try geocaching with some students. Looks interesting, but they don't let me play!

I started off with the free app for the iPhone but have now purchased the full app for a fiver. I'm suprised by the number of locations I walk past that have had caches located near to/within them. It's been a great incentive to get outdoors for me!

Have purchased the app and I too was surprised by the high number of caches hidden around here... never had time yet to get out and find any....

I organised a week-end in Wales for a group of bikers on another forum two years ago. We had a guy geocacheing with us then, found a couple of really remote ones. I'd never heard of it up until then but can see how folks could get hooked.
Heard a tale of a toy Volkswagen that was being taken from cache to cache across Europe to hopefully arrive at a big Volkswagen festival.

The owner of The Gourmet Cafe, Karen Brittain, said her business was affected and has called for tighter measures on internet treasure hunts.

"It was a busy day and customers in the cafe had to leave. There should be distinctive markings on these types of boxes."
Erm, wouldn't would-be bombers then make devices concealed with 'distinctive markings'?

While thinking of the boxes outsides, she has failed to think 'outside of the box'.

What the lady in question failed to realise, they do have distinctive markings on them and even the telephone number of the person who placed the cache and a link to the website.

I've always suspected that you could hide a real bomb inside something like this almost anywhere..

If you placed them in pubs it would be a good way to have a pub crawl.

Also ideal for publicans only patrons can find the geocache! May bring in trade

Funny you mention the bomb thing:

Doh. just noticed someone posted it already. But this appears to be a different write up.

So, we're new to this geocaching lark, and being the summer holidays etc thought it would be a great way to get our 2 primary school age kids out and about.

We've now registered with the geocaching website, and have tried a couple of sites around the Baswich area, but have failed dismally to find anything so far - despite looking carefully.

Just how well hidden are these 'containers'? And can anyone suggest one in and around Stafford that may be 'easy' to find, so that we don't lose the interest of our 7 year old at this early stage - it is only the first day of the school holidays and he's already going off the idea!!!

Thanks

This sounds really cute. I'm going to check for an Andriod app. Seems like you have to carry things around to replace the cache. What kind of things do you take with you?

HI Dabbler,

Some that I would recommend as being fairly easy are:-

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC2CRYG
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC2FDH1
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC1W6YX
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC2WE18

Some are well hidden some are not so well hidden... Remember they can be anything from a very very small magnetic cache to a massive box or bottle (I once found a 5Lt water cooler bottle as a cache!) Have a look at http://www.ukgeocachers.co.uk/catalog/Cache-Containers.html to give you an idea of the sort of thing.

Good luck

T
