if they paid me in cash (just a couple of quid or so) instead of biscuits, weak tea and a bruise on my arm, well, i'd give more.

selfish i know but there you have it

Skilled!
Groupie! You never skilled me for starting this...

Edit: They're listening in! I've just had an email from them saying that it's National Blood Week - 13th to 19th - and actually World Blood Donor Day today, the birthday of the bloke what started it all, apparently..

If I could drink something that knocked me out, they could take as much blood as they wanted... until then.... sorry but no....

As soon as they come at you with the needle, you'll faint.

Simple. And no unpleasant side-effects.

can you all man up a little, i've laid cable which has been much more painful than what i endured yesterday. I got two free pints of squash, a packet of crisps, some bourbon biscuits, and most importantly, the sense of well being from knowing that i could be helping to save a life

if you can find the time i seriously reccomend going. in all seriousness i've known a fair few people who've received blood in the past few years and it has always either helped save their life, or at the very least it's helped prolong it. that could be you or someone you care for one day

Where abouts did you go to give it? And are you allowed to give when you are on anti depressants?

i now live in wolverhampton, but if you check out the website i mentioned above (www.blood.co.uk) they will tell you the places near to you. I'm unsure if you can give blood whilst on medication, but again check the website, and phone up the freephone number given on it if necessary

I used to give blood when the blood people came to GEC. Fainted a few times and they had to stop, but what they did get out of me hopefully went to good use.

I couldn't give it sometimes when I had taken headache tablets that morning (for hangovers !) and can no longer give it as I am now on Thyroxine.

I know both of my parents wouldn't be alive today if it wasn't for lots of good people donating theirs. They must have been given gallons between them over the years. My dad did used to give blood regularly though when he was fit & well and he used to cycle there. It soon came gushing out of him with his blood pumping around his body so fast.

If you are interested in still giving blood, I think you are ok even if taking thyroxine. My Dad kept going and he's been on it for years. Give them a call. Some regular meds they are ok with. Paracetamol for a hangover is also ok, but I think it has to be out of your system, so more than 6 hours after taking.
If anyone else is thinking that they would give blood if only they weren't such a wuss, please consider how much is used every day by hospitals. It all has to come from somewhere, and each donation does honestly save someone's life. We would be lost without people who give blood.

also bear in mind what I said. I'm not one who likes needles, i made a point of not watching it go in or come back out again, but i hardly felt a thing (my arm ached ever so slightly afterwards, but the actual pain of the needle going in was nowhere near as bad as stubbing your toe, and subsided a lot quicker). the staff on hand were also extremely pleasant and helpful, put my mind at ease with any concerns or queries i had, and so long as you have a sense of humour (which i believe are in the t's and c's for joining this forum) you'll be able to have a bit of banter with them to take your mind off any worries

Was it your first time Dangerous?
The banter gets better. Gramaisc tells me the last time he was there the lady asked him to give her a "gentle fist", at which point he was unable to continue the conversation....
It hurts less than a punch in the face, and gives you a lovely "slightly pissed" feeling afterwards.
I've been a donor for 22 years now, and am looking at getting my gold award in the next couple of years, but the best thing is that being a nurse I see where it goes. Every donation makes a difference.

Lover, as i am, of a good punch in the face, and an adorer of feeling "in any way pissed", i am knowingly oversold.

'Pon my word i'll be up for the next one.

Giz a shout next time they're about, eh Florence?

Or Gramaisc - just in case you're feeling left out.

you'll need to register beforehand. best way to do it is to phone 0300 123 23 23, tehy'll ask you a few questions, register you up, and then book you in

and yes, it was my first time. I didn't actually get that 'slightly pissed' feel, in fact i went off to band practice later that night and just hammered the drums without any adverse affect (no real aching arms, and it's a proper cardio workout...)

I'm no gynaecologist...
I used to give at the gatehouse in stafford. The 'last' time I went the stupid bitch stabbed me in the arm 8 times before saying "its not good I'm going to have to put my glasses on". Half way through my arm switched off due to the amount of stabbing and I couldn't feel anything or use the arm properly for two days.
I went to the doctor and he told me that the arm had detected the huge amount of stabbing to the veins and decided to turn it off.
F**K that never again. I'm Ar- which is the one they love for pregnant women and I'm always in demand. They can suck it if they think I'm ever going back again.
