1. I don't think so.

Nearly four million households risk overpaying on energy bills due to faulty smart meters

2. I have never had any difficulty reading a meter.

3. There shouldn't be other suppliers as it shouldn't have been pirateised by the Tories.
That article is very misleading. For example, I had a 'faulty' smart meter with a certain supplier, that supposedly wouldn't send readings. Amazingly, when I switched suppliers it started working correctly. For the majority of cases, the fault lies with the energy supplier not the meter; quite simply, with many suppliers, there are not enough customer support staff and meter specialists to cope with the rollout and solve simple issues setting up these meters.

That said, almost 90% of smart meters have been properly set up and are fully functional (and most of the other could be, if certain energy companies got their act together).

Thanks to my smart meter, I pay 40% below the cap for gas and 30% below the cap for electricity, and that's ignoring other measures which reduce my energy costs further.

My plan remains to cut my energy costs (including heating and car fuel) to zero, within the next two years, and my smart meters will play an important part in achieving that target.

1. If I was a betting person, and if my experience with British Gas is anything to go by, I'd bet that the fault lies with British Gas and not the meters.
2. If you are finding reading the meters manually an issue, ask them to put you on the Priority Services Register and ask them to read your meters for you. https://www.britishgas.co.uk/priority-service-register
3. Consider moving to a supplier with better customer services, that's just about anyone else except Scottish Power. That would also help you get any credit back, as that would automatically be refunded after you've switched and received your final bill from British Gas.
Indeed, most smart meters will work between suppliers now (compared to before when they didn’t work if you moved)

And yeah, British Gas and Scottish Power are useless. Obligatory £50 Octopus Credit referral link, if anyone wants a decent supplier.

We do actually have a smart meter issue, compounded by the position in the house and the lack of signal here. We have spent a long time on the phone to Octopus who are absolutely trying to fix it. We need a smart meter to run our car, because we need a special tariff - I can't read meters every half an hour!

We sometimes have issues with half hourly reads not going in on Agile but they store a tonne of data so they can pull from them manually, does yours just never push up at all?

Generally you either get data or you don't, intermittent issues are unusual due to the data buffering

I have a smart meter (for electricity), it is not in the UK and it has worked since the day it was installed last year, I get fully up-to-date accounts from that supplier. I was aware that my smart meter installation was likely to happen and I stumbled into Marek as he was doing it one day. If I hadn't caught him actually doing it, then I would have noticed when I did my next Sunday's weekly reading.

I have 'traditional' meters in Stafford and an odd usage pattern which has been the same for several years. The various suppliers that I have had, as they have gone bust and transferred me on, have been unable to believe the reality that they have records for and, if they can catch me there, will send a bloke round to read the electricity meter, but not the adjacent gas meter, on the basis, presumably, that I am unlikely to have bypassed the gas meter. I have, at times, had monthly payments of only £1, as they struggle to deal with the overpayments that they inflict on me.

Currently in the arrivals lounge at Nice airport waiting for the current Mrs p to arrive. When she eventually does we will take a short drive across the border and spend a couple of days chilling out in Sanremo. Sun (hopefully), sea and pasta, lurvely.

There's an issue with the Comms hub they think so we've been put on the list to get an upgraded meter. We found out yesterday that if they don't get one of the half hourly readings in a day they bill the whole day on a different rate, I guess because it's so much work to pull it through.

We just stop getting electricity bills until it’s pulled, lol

Yeah, I've heard this too. My home has a very poor signal for phones but luckily my meter works fine, I've head there are numerous things they can do to boost it but obviously you need something to boost, can they fit an external antena?

What about a home mini, would they take reads off that? It'd go through your broadband then.

We've asked for that too. They definitely want to fix it but it's taking time.

Because we have export too it doesn't store that many reading so they can't pull some historic stuff.

Funnily enough they came to read my meter yesterday. Or rather the guy told me he'd just put whatever number I said if I wanted to shout it out. I guess since covid people are less likely to just invite them in? Kinda made it pointless though as I could have lied!

Company social evening with takeaway, the gang wanted a curry so we ordered from Bengal Lounge. I’m not a curry person so a couple of us ordered from Pepe’s instead.

It was only after they finished and they said “hmm, that didn’t sit well” that we checked the food standards rating for Bengal Lounge which sits solidly at a 1/5. As we parted ways later that evening, I wished them good luck over the 4 day weekend.

I wanted to buy a book, checked online prices, it was £17 on Amazon and WHS.
I was going to town anyway so in the spirit of supporting the High St I decided to buy the book from WHS.

At the till the price came up at £25 which I queried and was told that £17 was the online price and £25 was the shop price.
Needless to say I have ordered from Amazon saving £8 and they wonder why the High Street is dying.

Can anyone explain why WH Smths still exists?

Surely it’s not another money laundering front like the rest of the High Street?

That bell on the front counter

There’s nowhere to wash your hands !

Imagine who’s pressed that, and where their fingers have been…
