New Police & Crime Commissioner - elections in November

On 15 November 2012 everyone will have a chance to elect a police and crime commissioner for Staffordshire Police. They will be in charge of :-
  • holding the chief constable to account for the delivery of the force
  • setting and updating a police and crime plan
  • setting the force budget and precept (council tax contributions)
  • regularly engaging with the public and communities
  • appointing, and where necessary dismissing, the chief constable

Please all go out and vote - but please bare in mind when deciding who to vote for - I urge you to not go for a candidate that supports Police privatisation. The tories are already killing our services, and they have now decided on this expensive PCC - if someone gets in (who believes in privatisation) they will get rid of the control rooms (where you ring 999) and other 'civilian' 'back office' function/roles. These could be sold off to the likes of steria / G4S (god help us all) or companies alike. Once these companies get the contracts its almost impossible to get out of them. Some forces that have gone down outsourcing / privatisation have lost money and not made the savings they were supposed to. These companies are being paid millions to save money .... and its not working.

Because it will probably be a cold dark evening on 15th November - it is worrying that not many people will go out and vote - please take the time - whatever your thoughts on the police - it would be a nail in the coffin if any PCC privatised any part of the police service. The likes of G4S would replace trained experienced workers with staff who have no understanding of our force.

Joy Garner (Labour) - against privatisation
Matthew Ellis (Conservative) - wants to privatise back office staff and his believes he can get up to 100 bobbies back on the beat by cutting bureaucracy and using iPads.

http://www.policeoracle.com/news/Po...lice-Privatisation-Must-Be-Stopped_45785.html

"Privatisation means that the police will be less accountable to the public. And people will no longer be able to go to the Independent Police Complaints Commission if they have a problem. When a critical incident happens, a force's ability to respond will be severely compromised. The only winners are private companies and shareholders who make profits at the expense of local services."

What do you all think?

The police force is one of the fundamental organs of the state and public accountability is essential - let's hope people can be bothered enough..

Brief details of the currently declared contenders - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-19525006 .
Wow, two candidates from the very top drawer there then...

Who's bloody stupid idea is it to have these police commissioner elections? Sounds like the usual bollocks we get from the Libdems (RIP come the next election with any luck) and the bee in the bonnet they have over issues the public don't care about one iota.

And why are there only two candidates?

Because it costs an arm and a leg to stand that is why, they wouldn't want someone who can think for themselves in the job do they?

And why couldn't the elections wait until next May when the County re-elects it's councillors, that would have saved money and ensured a better turnout.

I am sorry but I can not vote for either a Labour or Tory candidate because both parties have done their utmost to destroy this country!

We have a month to find another candidate. I would be prepared to put some effort into a John Marwood campaign.

Seriously.

I believe it costs £5000 deposit which you lose if you don't get 5% of the vote so unless you have the backing of a political party or a rich backer you couldn't risk standing.

Mind you the salary is over £100,000 (more than out MP's get) a year so it is a very lucrative position!

That figure is correct and to be formally nominated a candidate's nomination must be signed by a hundred people registered to vote within the police force area concerned.

Interestingly, the supplementary vote system will be used where a voter may vote for a favoured candidate and a second favourite candidate - not a lot of point in that, if there remains only two candidates on the ballot sheet.

In a nut shell - if Matthew Ellis :ohno: gets it he will certainly outsource all police staff/civilian staff - so when you ring 999 you will eventually be dealt with by G4S - god help us all. Dont forget his promise to deal with crime by giving Police Officers Ipads .....

If you vote for Joy Garner she is against privatisation - and she obviously has a brain and realises these companies such as G4S , Steria and alike are here to make a PROFIT. So the funding for the police will go to the companies where our police service has been outsourced to and they will dish out a percentage .....

Worryingly because the elections are on 15th November then any person could get in due to lack of interest or being cold November night.

If Matthew Ellis gets the job it will basically mean the Grim Reaper arriving for Staffordshire Police who were one of the top performing forces.

Please take the time to vote.

I will go and vote because it is my hard earned right but I won't vote for either of those two clowns!

I will despoil my ballot paper with something cutting and witty, should give the vote counters a laugh if nothing else!

If anyone has any ideas on what to write on the ballot paper then please let me know.

It's a Coalition government policy, but the policy features in a book (I forget the name), written by Conservatives like Matthew Hancock, Nadhim Zahawi and other 2010 intake Tory MPs and they're called Elected Sherriffs. Dan Hannan MEP wrote this article about them: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/d...ne-can-now-see-the-need-for-elected-sheriffs/

The Lib-Dems argued for them to be in November rather than May, from what I recall.

As the saying goes - if you dont vote - you cant complain after.

I will be voting for Joy Garner - purely on the grounds that she has promised not to privatise. If the tory idiot gets in he will privatise. He talks about back office staff - hopeing people dont understand - but he means the likes of our control rooms - where you ring 999.

Once our control rooms are privatised to a company there will be nothing stopping them shipping them off abroad - and you know how infuriating contacting your bank and you have to talk to someone that cannot speak your language adequately - add that to if you were burgled or had a car accident and you have to speak to untrained numpties !

Thanks for clearing that up Rowan :)

Had a confidential chat with a senior plod this week on a none policing matter

an unofficial force opinion might be ..

Joy Garner - thicker than a bucket of snot

Matthew Ellis - thinks he is Tony BlairDave Cameron and was told he had to stand by 'the party' rather than wanting the job

The third choice - Anyone?....

If Matthew Ellis becomes commissioner that may mean he cannot be cabinet member for social services.
