Staffordshire police boss in £282k staff bill

Staffordshire’s new police boss is recruiting three senior members of staff with a combined wage bill of £282,000 a year, it emerged today.

The Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Ellis is advertising for a chief of staff, head of commissioning and partnerships, and a policy, performance and communications chief to help run his office.
The former county councillor said the three positions were “absolutely critical” to making a success of his role and that the jobs represented a “small expense” when compared to the difference they would make.
According to an advert on the Staffordshire Police & Crime Commissioner website, a chief of staff will be paid £85,000. Mr Ellis, is paid £75,000 a year and his deputy, Sue Arnold, only £25,000 a year for three days work a week.
The position of commissioning and partnerships manager will be paid between £64,500 and £73,500 while the head of policy, performance and communications will get between £64,500-£73,500.

So what did we* vote him in for exactly, if he can't do the job without spending a load more? What does his chief of staff do, if he only has 3 other staff one of whom is part time? Why is he able to appoint people on more money than we agreed to pay him? Will we be shown clear metrics on the resulting changes from appointment to these positions? More to the point is anyone surprised?

* Thats an exclusive we, I didn't vote as I had no idea what it was all about.

And yet ignorance itself is not a crime, perhaps the newly appointed police whatsit could close that loophole?

I think the PCC Matthew Ellis is still a county councillor and a Lichfield borough councillor so he is raking in the money at the moment.

I really wish you'd get off the fence on this one mate and decide how you feel.

I can't help it, drink driving may be kind of illegal and kill the odd person that was otherwise minding their own business, a few people may get maimed and kids can get orphaned, but sometimes after a skinful you just can't be arsed to walk home and can't justify the taxi fare when you have a car waiting for you to use. Besides, alcohol doesn't affect me like it does other people, I can handle my drink. Hell, I possibly drive better when I'm wasted! At least the journey seems a lot quicker anyway....
