It makes perfect sense

Stafford is a fast food town

Or a two for a tenner town

Not enough exceptions to have much else survive it

I'm afraid I beg to differ Mr. Marwood. I actually think we don't have enough really good quality restaurants selling proper food as opposed to the junk they chuck in the microwave to reheat and hope for the best. I much prefer to pay £15-£20 for a main and get something edible.

I don't think we have enough good quality restaurants selling proper food either. ..

Precisely because Stafford will not pay for them

Sadly

Pastiche?

Surely that proves the point....
There's nowt wrong with Pastiche. Unless you are referring to the prices rather than the quality. Good on them for continuing to serve high quality food at affordable prices with an innovative menu that changes every month. AND on top of that coming out of a recession they expand and double the size of their premises.

It was their price point reference

I think that's generalising just a tad. There are people in Stafford who are prepared to pay for quality. I do agree there are also people who aren't but I don't think that's just a Stafford thing.

I disagree

We both may know these kinds of people but there number are not high enough to sustain this level of restaurants

Going right back to the days when a classic restaurant opened in Martin Street offering silver service . It failed.

It's very difficult to succeed to be fair.

You buy your food in the shop - zero VAT. You buy a meal out +20% VAT

As Proactive says there are still plenty of quality places to eat in and around Stafford. Try booking a table at The Swan, The dog and doublet or the Wayfarer at Stone (which by the way is amazing) - all are always busy and you need to book in advance.

I wasn't impressed with the food at the dog and doublet..the place, the drinks and the service were great, but Sandon ain't Stafford

The Wayfarer does a job, but it ain't Stafford either

Not tried the Swan for a few decades, I think Charles Dickens was at the bar it's that long ago

So if you believe that Stafford people prefer junk food and two for a tenner meals, does that go across the board for other items as well as eating out?
Luxuries, treats and items that it isn't possible to buy in Poundland or Home Bargains?

proactive

Enjoying a drop of red.

I've never eaten at any of these establishments of an evening, without having to book in advance and finding them very busy.

Don't recall the Holly Bush at Salt doing 2foratenner either last time I went.

There is plenty of money in Stafford and surrounds, People are just very choosy how they spend it.

I totally agree Proactive, that was going to be my next point when Mr. Marwood answered my question. With examples of why this is the case haha

I'm not after a fight

I think my point is made by Cullen's

Stone can support a top restaurant

Stafford cannot

If there was a market for a Cullen's we would have one

In fairness, Richard Cullen is FROM Stone.

I am really excited that Paul Gilmore has come to Stone too. His food is amazing. If either of them opened restaurants in Stafford I'm sure they would do brilliantly too but it probably is an advantage to be somewhere with a thriving restaurant community. You kind of go to Stafford for a curry...
