Poundworld Stafford on Queens Retail Park

Now don't get me wrong, in the current climate I'm happy that a store is opening rather than closing and happy for those people it employs - but...
I couldn't help that sinking feeling when I read about this that it was yet another discount, stack 'em high sell 'em cheap market shed. Surely we have enough of these already? : - (

Yeah, can't help thinking it is shame. Good news that someone is doing well out the national economic mess - shame that because of it we end up with little choice but pound sheds.
I did think given the popularity of Queens and given the fact that it has managed to attract the likes of Next and Next Home etc in recent years that it would do better than this, especially as there is already several discount chains on that retail park, such as Boozers and Mingers (B&M)

I like B &M - it's saved me a fortune on goods that I've bought from there rather than paying a hell of a lot more for the same brands in Asda etc

You have to watch Poundstetcher as lots of the stuff either hasn't got a price label by it or the price goes through completely different to the price on the shelf. They have tried doing me out of my change a few times too often as well. I always make a mental note of the last 4 numbers when giving them £20 &£10 notes so that I can argue what I've actually just given them when given change for less.

Thats capitalism, people will sell what other people want for whatever price they will pay. With so many out of work, or only able to get part time jobs, the bargain end of the shopping spectrum is booming and people are cashing in. They even opened a fake primark in Bahrain the other week, a fake bargain shop FFS!

I love B&M its like Toys r Us for grown ups.
Plenty of tat for sure but for evryday stuff like bleach (39p) resealable sandwich bags (89p) pump toothpaste (99p) .....oh I could go on but I must try not to be boring...........
I can't bear spending more money than I have to...I love a bargain me.
But yes, I agree there is no need for another cheap shop down there.
I would have liked a BHS Home like the one near Festival Park in Hanley.

But would you spend enough in a BHS home to keep it going? There are loads of shops I'd like, but most I'd only use a few times a year so they aren't that practical. Plus as I also love a bargain I'd probably buy most stuff online still as its generally cheaper.

I'm hoping the new asda home (or whatever its called) will be well stocked, as their website rarely has the stuff we want available to order.

Tek monkey......lol, I think they might have other customers apart from me!

Mind you, at the moment I am spending a fortune in "housy shops" having just had a wall knocked through and a new kitchen put in.
Some things I wont buy online as I need to look, touch, feel and see. (same as choosing a man really!)

I think it's a real shame the big Debenhams didn't go ahead, I would seriously prefer that to another pound shop! Between the discount tat, the loan/pawn shops and the claim for an accident places Stafford is really going down hill.

Yeah but if its a shop that most people rarely use then it needs to have high profit margins. That immediately means very few bargains, and usually means priced way above the internet where there are limited costs of 'premises'. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to be able to buy everything I wanted in town, but working means I can't shop for 3/4 of their opening hours even if I chose to.

Bob, I couldnt agree more with you about Debenhams.
I was so excited when i heard we might be getting a dept store ....either Debs or John Lewis. I was soooooooooooo disappointed to find out it was to be Morrisons. I have nothing against Morrisons but another supermarket is hardly going to draw hoards to Stafford is it?

There was a full page ad for the new Poundworld in last week's E&S and the first item in the ad was £2 :shifty:

I think a decent Supermarket is more useful then a tiny dept store - where you'd end up traipsing to Brum / Manchester / Liverpool because the item isn't in stock here. Genuinely what extra things would John Lewis / Debenhams offer that Stafford doesn't already have, just in a separate shop?

Mind you, when I lived next to a John Lewis I generally spent my time in the cookware section, and we're a little spoiled for that kind of thing in Stafford between Cooks and Co, Kirklands and the Coop

For me it'd be the clothes, shoes and handbags (I love anything Radley), and the makeup - stuck on benifit stuff now that has not yet been seen in Stafford, so must head to another town where they have a Debenhams!

We already have three big supermarkets, and countless Co-op/Tesco Express/Somerfield etc how much food can one town eat?

For me it would be the houseware dept. There is not really much choice in Stafford for good quality bedding, towels, etc. I agree that there are some decent cook shops in Stafford but nowhere near the choice that you would find in a large Dept store.
Also would love to have more choice in clothes and shoes.
I agree that a small dept store would not be much use but a great big one...now your talking.
I have to go to Brum or Hanley to get my fix.

I'm not arguing for another Supermarket - and certainly not a Morrisons - I find their selection of stuff disappointing - I'm just interested in what people think a department store could bring. I've never really found Stafford lacking in anything, but I buy a lot of clothes online, make up form my Avon lady, and I'm not allowed any more bedding - although I'm generally drawn to Argos for that, so it might just be me.

Went in there the other day and half the stuff isn't even a quid! Some things were cheap, but most of it didn't seem all that cheap.
