I still think the answer is to have a clockwise ring road (Queensway, round passed the cinema, passed the station, Chell road).

Filter out to the left, filter in from the left, with a few access/egress points to/from the town centre itself. Then we can get rid of nearly all the traffic lights and most of the roundabouts.

Easy.

I take it you've never been to Coventry?

Just admit defeat, knock down the middle of the town and stick this in.

There must be a reasonable case for turning off traffic lights outside of busiest hours ? especially on roundabouts. The new-ish lights bottom of Newport rd, by the golf course entrance, could be off (flashing amber) through the evening and early morning as could those through Doxey.

At some point before I die I hope that everyone realises that no matter how much money is spent on roads and their associated infrastructure the only long term solution to traffic is to get people off their fat arses and on to more sustainable modes of transport!

But as we all know, there will never be the money put into a cohesive traffic management policy and definitely not into public transport.

The car is just too easy to use to get exactly where you want to go compared to any other forms of transport.

I was in Nottingham the other week and most of the lights had cameras on them, to stop this.

While we are on this subject, I can't believe the amount of drivers that don't know what a Box Junction is, and just stop inside them, when they should not. I must see this loads of times every day.

Enjoying a drop of red.
They yellow squares on the sides give them priority parking in box junctions.
And automatically switches on the blues and twos to get through a set of lights on red as well as switching them off once they are through, I have noticed on many, many occasions.

This is because they tend to only user sirens and lights if necessary not because it's required when answering a shout. So turning them off after clearing a congested junction doesn't mean they aren't answering an emergency call.

In some cases possibly. I'm talking about the times when they then happily stay with the flow of traffic and make no effort to overtake once past the 'obstruction'.

I think in some areas of Stafford when the traffic lights break down the traffic actually runs smoother. In particular the lights at the top of Rickerscote near Tesco Express.
